Does anyone know where the VIN numbers are located on a 70 chevelle? I recently acquired one and noticed that the cowl tag and the dashboard VIN are missing. There is no engine and I checked the tranmission but did not see a complete VIN on the TH400 or any information on the doors either. The only numbers I saw on the actual casing of the transmission were 8623462 and on the tag was 75-cp-27265. Any information would be helpful. Thanks

Well, sitting in the drivers seat, the VIN number should be located in the forward most part of the left dashboard directly in front of you. The cowl tag should be underneath the hood, located in the cowl area. If both of the tags are gone, the only thing you'll be able to use is the build sheet; assuming its even on the car at all. If your going to turn this thing into a dedicated dragster, then you should have no problems at all. However, you might want to call the local branch of the DMV in your state to see how the problem (if there is a probelm at all given the year of you Chevelle) can be solved.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks BBB. I was hoping to get the VIN number before I went to the DMV. Someone told me to look on the frame itself but I was not sure of that. I will look in the places you told me. Magwai

There are a couple more places to look.
On top of the frame rail on the back left (?) side. Can't see it with the body on. I also there is a partial in the channel on the side of the trunk.

There is another one in a hidden on the firewall, but I think you have to remove the heater duct/air cond. housing to see it.

Is this a parts car that was too far gone to restore and some one liffted the VIN & cowl tags, or do you think it has been "disposed of?"

Good Luck.

If you take off the outer heater core cover (the one under the hood that the blower motor attaches to) you will find most of the VIN number stamped in the firewall. You have to remove these parts, because they cover them. I believe it starts with the letter code denoting where it was built, but it does include the sequence number. There is a couple other places too, but I don't remember where. Seems like I remember something about the passenger side trunk seal lip area.

Most likely, if the VIN and cowl tag are gone, someone has put them on another car, so once you explain your situation to the DMV, whomever is currently using those tags on another car might end up in hot water.

Thanks DG and Joey-T. That helps out alot. I am trying to find out if they pieced this car together and took the VIN. I never received the title and now I am stuck tying to research the history on it. It never fazed me to look at the VIN since I was in La La land about actually owning a Chevelle. Oh well. More research to do and at least I know where to look. Thanks. Magwai
