A 10 bolt will work, just rebuild it with good parts as Tom suggested. On street tires a 10 bolt will be hard to break unless you have wheel hop...then just about any rear can fail they are not designed to take that type of rapid loading/unloading and parts will break.

Yeah, I'm just running normal 255's in the rear. So what would you rebuild it with? I need to do gears anyway since I went from a th350 to a muncie. Would i be able to just do the carrier or do I need to do the axles right away too? I'd like to do things gradually if possible. Its a new project and have the rest of the car to throw money at as well, if you know what i mean....

IMO it is better to do all new parts at the same time. Why leave a weak link that could possibly fail and ruin the new parts. Chances are the axles in there now are worn at the bearing surface area and will need replaced. New Moser axles are not much more when compared to the cost of other after market axles and add a lot of strength and reliability to the build.

I hear ya. So what do you think I should look for? 30 spline Mosers, eaton posi and 3.50 gears? This is just a cruiser and tire shredder and maybe some short hw driving

Hi Mike,
8.2 10 Bolt differentials have 28 spline axles.
For the 10 Bolt, I recommend an Eaton 3 Series Posi Unit, Moser Axles, Timken Master Bearing Kit and Motive Pro Series Gears, Yukon or U.S Gear.

The O type rear is a good unit. Strong, bolt in axles, this one even has bigger brakes. I guess they are unpopular due to the high cost and availability of replacement parts.

Here in the Houston area, I got $800 each for the last two 2.73 peglegs that I sold. Posi or better ratio, skys the limit. A local resto shop/parts supplier gets the same $800. Don't know why, in my mind a decent 2.73 should be $300-$400.

Ive been looking for the last few months. Im use to paying 250 or alot less for a 12 bolt. I decided my budget will top out at $500 for one this time. O just talked to a guy thats got one for $650 drum to drum put of a running monte carlo. Brand new aaftermarket axles in the box. Only issue is its a 2.73 open

Hmmmmm, buy them here for $200- $250 and sell in Texas for $800. Might be worth the drive.

Or let me lnow when you find one under 500

Well, I was under the car installing the driveshaft and thought Id grab the #'s on my axle while there and run them for kicks. Come to find out its a 70-72 10 bolt. I'm running 255's and have no rubbing, about 1/4 clearance from the fender. I guess this opens up my search for an axle to all years now.
Anyone have a good link to a thread of what range of vehicles and years a 12 bolt can be used in a 67? Obviously the wider ones will work......

I just paid $400 for a 2.73 pegleg out of a 71el camino. No drips or leaks from the housing or the wheel cylinders. If and when I use it in my 67, im just going to bolt it in and top off the fluids. Im running 7"ralleys and 205-75 tires so clearance wont be a issue. Jim
