In my assembly manual it shows the (-) battery cable going to the block, right above the fuel pump. At shows, on the Internet, and in books, I’ve seen some very nice cars that have the cable bolted to the alternator bracket. Where is the factory correct location to attach the (-) battery cable in a 69 BB?

Thanks,
Mike

Hey Mike,

The '69 SS I had in '78 had the neg cable attached to the long bolt on which the alt pivots. The '69 SS I have now has the cable attached a the same spot. Considering the length of the cable [which is to my knowledge "factory correct"], I don't know where else it could go.....excpet on top of the alt...and I've never seen one like that.

I know you asked where the "factory correct" location was. All I can tell you is where I've seen them for the past 20 years

Hope this helps in some way.

Yes Don now that I look again I think you are correct. The attach point is higher that I thought. I think it is on the pass side head more or less just forward of the plug,

Thanks,

Mike

Take a look at the engine shot of my car on my web page. I think it's the right location, probably the same place you guys are talking about. There has been a lot of debate about this in the past, and I think there are a couple different 'acceptable' locations to be 'correct'. As I recall, there was some variation between assembly plants.

My 69 small block 350 has the negative cable connected to one of the bolts where the top radiator hose connects. There is a small bracket on the alternator bracket that holds the cable as it travels to the battery. The assembly manual I have also shows it to attach at this location. I encountered a problem with the cable length during my restoration of the engine compartment. It seems the factory battery had the pos and neg posts reversed from the reproduction batteries being made today. I had a special cable made so it was long enough. Sorry I can't help with big block information, but I thought I would answer the small block questions.

Bill,

...beautiful car! After reading the other posts and checking out your pictures I think I may check mine out tonight [taking another look at the assy man] and consider moving my cable attachment to the side of the head.

...or not.

Thanks for the questions and answers
