i just got the 396 running and it runs great, but when i give it about a little less than half throttle the engine misses. this will go away when i get up to speed i go about 60 on the highway. I know the timing is just a tad off, and it only has about 100 miles so far. I have a summitt hei distributor, is that the problem. I will be re adjusting everything at about 200 miles and need your help to find whats wrong.

It could be a number of things, the two which stick out in my mind are , you have a bad plug wire ( test the set with a digital VOM), or your valves need a touch of re-adjustment. But first set the timing properly and see if it goes away.

I've wasted a wire in a brand new set by horsing on it. And burned one through on the header another time.

Did you run a separate #10 wire from your ignition to the HEI for the HEI power? That won't cause it to miss but it's important.

Timing shouldn't cause it to miss, unless it WAY off and then it would pop back or show some other sign.

This sounds like a carberation problem to me. Check to see that all the jets are clean, etc. If it pops back, check the Power valve if it is a Holley.

Check your ignition real good. Do you have points? Make sure coil is not in backwards and all connections are good and clean, including the ground in the distributor.
