I disassembled my transmission yesterday for an overhaul and repair. One question that I have is what holds and drives the Nylon Speedometer Gear that is on the main shaft? When I removed the Tail section it was laying in there and I did not see how it was driven. It is Nylon and seems to have a keyway in it.

Thanks all

If you are referring to the nylon or plastic gear on the tailshaft, it is SUPPOSED to be retained on the shaft by a spring metal clip. One end of the clip has a loop and the other end has a tab which fits into a hole in the tailshaft. ONLY 69 (and maybe some 68 and some 70) Muncies had this plastic gear and metal clip. All the other years used a pressed-on metal gear. The later ones went back to a pressed-on metal gear. I would encourage you to also go back with a pressed on metal gear.
Also, does your shaft have holes in the curved splines for the sliding reverse gear? And, are there little springs in these holes? If so, THROW THE SPRINGS AWAY! They eventually wear down from the reverse gear sliding on them, then break apart and fall into the oil and circulate through the tranny.

There are holes where the reverse gear slides onto the curved spline but I do not see any springs. Maybe they were removed before or they got ate in the tranny. I did not see any c clip that was sopposed to hold the nylon gear in place for the speedometer. Looked real good when cleaning and no clip, maybe it got left out? Who knows but it looks like this has never been taken apart before. The pressed on gear sounds like a good idea though. Is there anything that holds this gear even though it is pressed on?

Thanks

Where is a good place to purchase one......

The pressed on gear is steel and once it is in place, it cannot move. The plastic gear is ONLY held onto the shaft with a spring clip. DID YOUR SHAFT HAVE A HOLE where the speedo gear goes? If so, that is where the clip was supposed to go. You first place the clip on the shaft, with the tab in the hole, then slide on the plastic gear until it snaps into place.
If you need either a steel gear, or you want to keep the plastic gear and need a clip, call Larry Fischer of D and L Transmission 631-351-4837. Tell him that I referred you.

Yes it has the hole where the clip goes. One question that I have is a replacement speedometer gear states if it is for a large or small shaft. I have the 27 spline main shaft. Are there different gears for that shaft?

Thanks

Yes, there are different gears for that shaft. What rear end gear do you have? If it is 2.73 to 3.70, then the most likely choice is the larger, 8 tooth gear (1.84in OD) for your size shaft (27 splines). Larry Fischer stocks it.

I have a stock 3.31 rear in the car. So I would assume that I should go with the 1.84, 8 tooth metal gear. Correct?
