Hey all -

Just checked out the listings for Insurance Auto Auctions, which runs sales across the country. Turns out there's a wrecked but apparently complete 70 SS (or a decent clone) that will be coming up for auction soon. These auctions are open to the public as well as dealers, but you have to have an annual membership which runs about $125 - small price to pay if you can get the car.

Getting back to the car, it looks like it was a pretty nice ride before the front end was tagged. May even be repairable. Has all the SS stuff from what can be seen. 71 seats and steering wheel, but otherwise looks fairly correct. SS-style dash, rear bumper, even has "70 SS" personalized CA tags! This one has to go to a fellow TCer rather than a dealer. Who can step up? Check out the details and 6 photos at:

My guess is that the car will go to the highest bidder, whether thats $50 or $5000. These are vehicles that have been declared totaled (cost to repair exceeds car's stated value), the claim has been paid, and the insurance companies are disposing of them to recoup whatever they can.

From the pics. it looks like it would be worth repairing. The rear panels and doors don't look out of line, maybe just front metal work. May have been hit high enough not to hurt the frame.Wish it were closer to Ohio as I would check it out.

OK, I must be stupid. I checked out your link and can't figure out how to contact them or where the car is located or when the auction is. Rainer any more info? Thanks

That would be a shame to let that go. I like the picture that clearly shows the radio is gone but the menu claims radio:Yes!
I'm not picking it apart, it's just ironic.

The car is a future. That means the date is not yet known when it will come up. The time is anywhere from next week to several months. You can call them at 619-670-1400 but they are not very helpfull. They wont tell you all the damage to the car or the motor in it or nothing what you see on the computer is what will you know. If you do indeed buy the car it will cost another two to three hundred bucks to get it out of there. If I remeber right if you buy it at the live auction not over the internet you have only three days to remove it or it will cost you thirty bucks a day. The net buyers get one week to remove it.

The car will be allowed to be bid on up to three different times, meaning if it doesnt sell the first time it will come up for sell at a later date. After the third date and it dosent sell its labled unsellable and goes to the local scraper for scrape metal.

RC, more info:

The word "San Diego" is a hyperlink which takes you to the web page for that location. It has the address, driving directions, preview hours (Fri. 9-4:30) and auction dates (every Mon. starting at 10:30). I wouldn't expect specific info about the car over the phone or via email, only info about the auction. If they gave info on the cars, they'd be on the phone all day. And I wouldn't be surprised if they were less than helpful on the phone because there's inside interest in the car.

Although the auction date is TBD, expect it to happen within the next couple weeks. That's what I've noticed while keeping an eye on their auctions over the past couple months. Anyone planning on going should keep tabs on that web page for the date. And remember, you have to be a registered member.

As far as extra fees, etc., the car, if repairable, is easily worth several thousand dollars, so a few hundred bucks to get it "wholesale" seems like a small price to pay, IMHO. You can bet I'd be there if I lived anywhere near

You bet, Tom. Every week there are at least a couple Chevelles across the country up for sale through IAA. I've seen them in WI, IL, KY, TX, CA, WA, MO - you name it. Even a 70 2-door right in my area last month that I had to pass on (no room). Right now there's also a 67 El Camino in CA and a 72 Chevelle in TX. Would be nice to see a fellow TCer score one from this auction. Who will be the first?

Pete -

Here's a link to their list of branches:
www.iaai-bid.com/branchlist.asp

Click on the St. Louis link, then on the button to view the auction list. There's a 65 Lincoln in this Thursday's auction that would probably round out that collection of yours quite nicely

edit - bad news, some of the locations are only open to people with dealer's licenses. Yours happens to be one of them

You must be a licensed dealer or dismantler to attend our auction

Pete I bet we could find a friend around here with a dealer or dismantler license

All in all, not that bad. Unless the frame is horribly twisted, it looks repairable. The hood didn't even come back far enough to crack the windshield, from what I could see. In the mid 80's, my wife was driving my 70 when some kid in a 68 Nova shot out from a strip mall across 3 lanes to reach the street across from the mall. The problem was there was a tractor trailer making a right turn into the mall, hiding this kid until he appeared from behind the trailer. She barely had time to hit the brakes when she clocked him right at the Nova's body pillar behind the front right wheel. Took out the left front fender, the grill, the hood, bumper and the radiator support on the Chevelle. BUT, the kid's insurance company gave me the money to fix it! The hood came back just far enough to crack the windshield. Man, if someone could get this car for a few thousand it certainly would be worth it. It would be a shame to part it out.

OK, so you guys are closer to KC than StL. Well then, looks like you have a 4-dr 62 Buick Special coming up in the next auction. Not quite a Lincoln, but closer to a Chevelle

Might not be a bad deal but I bet there are ALOT of others watching it as well and that wont help the price stay cheap.

There will definitely be lots of interest, but primarily from the dealers, which means that they can't afford to pay what its worth if they want to make a buck on it. That's where the advantage goes to the hobbyist.
