Here are some pics of old time filling stations and their cars and attendants .
Seems they were using corn alcohol for gas way back too. Check out the stacked parked cars in the cities-6 high.
Happy new year and lets hope this economy stays going eh?

YEP!
I remember seeing one of those back when I was a kid in the 50s.
An elevator was used (installed between the two racks). It moved back and forth in tracks. It was moved over to a column, raised/lowered to the desired level, the selected car was driven onto the elevator and then lowered to ground level.
This type of elevator was also used INSIDE some of the old multi-story car dealers in Okla City and the convention center in Okla City has an elevator that is regularly used for taking cars, freight, animals, etc up to two different levels in the convention center.

Oh ya, I just remembered, a later version of this type of parking garage was just torn down in downtown OKC to make room for a more modern parking garage.

thanks for that tom ,interesting read . cheers.

They had one of those parking 'garages' in Steubenville, Ohio in the 50's early 60's. Called it
'Pigeon Hole' parking. It only had one side of elevated slots, maybe 3 or 4 high IIRC. As kids, we thought that was the coolest thing!

I am pretty sure that driving that early 50's Pontiac with the travel trailer would turn some heads today. Those are some great photos. Thanks for posting.
From time to time people ask questions about towing with a passenger car from the past. Particularly the guys on the Chevy Talk forum with 55-57 Chevys. And many of the replies don't recommend doing so. I clearly remember that back in the day people regularly towed all kinds of trailers with the family car.
I still do.

There are some great photo threads on the HAMB message board forum. I have only been part way thru a few of them, but one is dedicated to filling stations, all the way back to the teens, one is downtown photos from days gone by, old drag cars, old open wheeled cars, old abandoned cars, especially scenes from Az and Utah, where guys hike in and hike back out of the mountains and deserts and take pix of abandoned cars, mining camps and other old stuff that is in the middle of nowhere.
