Aren't you glad you start these threads?

When I was in Maui this year with my wife for our 37th anni.... I tried on a $34,500 Rolex that was gold and fit me perfectly. I do not own a Rolex 'cause I would not buy it....

... even WITH the extended warranty.

It IS a nice watch, tho.....

Most times.I guess you have arrogant, mean spirited people that think they are better than anyone else no matter where you go.:D
If you are reffering to me Gary, you can suck it. I am not arrogant, mean spirited, or think I am better than anyone. I think I am a person that doesnt want his time wasted playing a game that car dealers invented to intentionally screw people over.

I own a business in which I DO have to genuinely care what the customer wants, and I DO have to provide for them what they want, and i dont have the option of providing a low price up front and then screwing them over with interior treatments and garbage extended warranties. I DO have to go in with one best price, and if I dont get the sale I dont get to say "well let me go talk to my sales manager", I lost the sale. You guys try to play the game, and waste everybodies time. Well not everybody is an idiot that gets suckered into it. Some of us know their are plenty of dealers around and when one doesnt understand the value of a customers time, the next one will and they can get us the same car at the same or better prices.

Yikes.

In all fairness to the salesman,he is not the roadblock or time waster it is the guys like me in the store that keeps the poor guy coming back and forth.Believe me,the salesguy wants you out of there and a deal done as much as the customer. If it were up to the salesman they would give the store away to make a deal. They have no idea what the cost is,trade value, intrest retention, etc. These poor guys work their butts off, long hours and:) constant abuse from us managers.Next time you are buying a car take pity on the salesperson, believe me he gets enough abuse already.
That's why I say the salesperson is the road block. If the customer would talk directly to the sales manager, the deal would get done quicker. Any other people involved are just getting in the way of the sale. Same thing happens at a retail store. Salesperson can't approve a discount, but the manager can. Most recent car purchase took six damn hours. Part was trying determine if a lease trade-in was available for sale and the price. That wasted 2 hours. Less than an hour to test drive a new car, make the deal, and start the wait for finance. After two hours, it was another one to sign papers. All this with a pregnant wife and a 8 month old baby. Felt bad for the salesperson and ticked I didn't just tell them to draw the papers and I'll be back tomorrow to sign. But, the sales guy was telling personal stories he shouldn't have been. Scammin' the gov't and talking bad about his wife. Just for that, should not have given that guy a sale.

I've never shopped for a car. I'm after something specific. I know what I want, go in, get what I consider a good deal and leave. Haven't figured out how to reduce the time on-site.

oh, and I don't have a watch :p . Watches are for metrosexual men. lol.

Jeff, there comes a time when every business evaluates their customers, the ones that are not profitable, the bitter ones like yourself, who you can't make happy no matter what! The 10%!

You know the ones I'm talking about as a contractor. The ones just like you, they want everything for nothing, all they care about is what will you give them free. So basically what your saying is you cater the ones just like you, I'm out! I don't want you as a customer. You are more problemmatic than you are worth. I bet not only are you a pain in the butt to deal with in the sales process, I bet your well liked in service also.

I don't drop my pants for every customer that walks through the door. At some point if your expectations get unreasonable and you want to take money out of my pocket, then you need to work for it! I'm good at what I do, and I don't have to go back and fourth to the salesmanager. I know what we have in our inventory, and my job is to make a reasonable profit, in which I get a small percentage.

I will however cut through alot of redtape, I will give you a fair price, and I will make the process as painless as possible! Not only that, I will be there to help you if it breaks and work through any of those problems with you.

By the way I do this as my retirement job. I don't need to work, but unlike you if I'm going to do this I might as well enjoy it and make money! It's called capitalism, not whoring out your services and undercutting the next guy. You can't stay in business that way!

I usually have a little less problem with the bs from a new dealer than a used one trying to put lipstick on a pig and lie like crazy... but I've really only had pretty good experiences at new dealers probably since my brother has worked at one for probably close to 20 years (was sales for a bit, now a service manager). His personal connections cut through the bs, even at other dealers, they'll give me their cost + what they want (and not 'dealer cost') and give me the warranty at cost usually as well.

I'll share a little story...my dad went to a gm dealership to look at a truck, a salesman threw him a really low price on a new truck (too good to be true)...so my dad went to my brother and told him (my brother is not gm)...he told him that it's just a sales tactic to get you interested and they'll work up the price. So we all went back a few hours later, the sales manager saw my brother...recognised him and pulled the salesman aside before we even got 10' into the door... the salesman walked right up to my dad, and said said "i'm sorry, you know i can't do that price" looked at my brother and said "you know the game" my brother said, "yup that's what i thought"...and we walked out...

I say you know what you get when you're going in... you have to be willing to deal a bit, work it, and even walk away...at the end of it, as long as your happy with the price...

I'd rather deal with car salesman anyday, work out my price for something i can see than deal with contractors who give you a price then try to cut as many corners as they can to put more profit in their pockets! ...another story, I was doing an addition on my home, i called a well known foundation contractor that i didnt know personally... i spec'd my concrete at 32mpa... asked a for a quote, didn't beat him up on the price, I told him that i manage construction for a living, and that i know what i'm doing. time came to pour the concrete, i happened to be home when the mixer showed up (since i don't trust contractors)...check the slip and it was 25mpa...the owner was busy pouring etc. at that point i could live with it... later after pouring the piles the contractor came up to me and said this "i used the wrong concrete right?" me: "yup" him:"i owe you money right" me:"yup"...and the price came down... but how many people don't know what to look for?? and get ripped off, up and down, and on many things never notice....all so one guy can be lower than the next, or put a little more profit in their pocket??

It happens in many many industries, sales, hourly etc...

Eric, I think you have Jeff all wrong here. He is anti-pain in the butt during the sales process. He calls around, gets the best price, and then goes in to get the vehicle. Done deal. He has said no haggling many times here and that his time is more important than bickering to get every dime and penny possible off the price.

I'm the same way. My time is worth more to me than getting the "best deal" possible... i.e. bickering for hours for a few hundred off the price. I look around for a vehicle I like, a price I feel is fair, go in, and as long as I get what I want for my trade (realistic and fair) it's a done deal.

Does that make me a pain in the butt. I would think that's an easy sale. Of course I also don't buy any of the extra crap offered, so maybe that's what makes us a pain in the butt. :D

...

Questions for you car guys/sales/dealers out there. Has the internet chagned things as far as sales, haggling, and all that? As I said, that's where I look around and the "internet special" is often well below the window sticker (used here), so I print that off and bring it in. Not much to be said when I can say, here's what you advertised it for and I'm not trying to go lower.

The internet is fine for buying a new car,but it has destroyed the used car end of it.It has overinflated prices so much, the consumer is really paying way too much for a used car today.

Is that to say that the window sticker price on a used car is way jacked up? That did seem to be the case. And, then the "internet special" is close to what the price actually should be?

In my research, the "internet special" was always right in line with suggested retail for the vehicle from Kelly, Edmonds, and so on. Unless those guys are in on it too? :D
