Hey guys,

My poor old Dell that I use at the shop for internet access has been having a harder and harder time with tons of graphics and other junk that seems to be on more and more web sites. It is only a 1.7G processor and only has 256K memory. Is it going to do me any good to max out the memory or should I just save my money and look for something newer and faster ?

Thanks,

XP

The other issue is that this thing also has Windows 2000 on it and I could not figure out how to remove it no matter what I tried.
As noted, memory is pretty cheap but even 1GB or RAM isn't much even for XP but it will be a big improvement over 256MB.

I don't understand what you mean by "...remove..." 2000? One can only remove an OS by formatting the drive and/or installing a different OS which I assume you've done since you say it has XP.

I'd go for memory.
If this is an XP machine ,you can do a repair install that puts Windows back to original and doesn't wipe your programs/settings/etc off the hard drive.
You would need your XP install disk and it does set it back to original config -Yeah ,Im saying it twice as none of the updates/upgrades from original transfer over and it takes a while to get all the Windows updates -It'll kill most of an afternoon

Did/does the MFG offer a disk?
Some of the MFG's modify the OS to suit their needs -read ad's,BS trial programs, and removing some MS stuff ,like repair install-so there may not be one for your specific model.
I tried a standard XP disk on a HP desktop once and it did work but no guarantee it'll work a second time.
Check with your MFG and see if ones available and if their disk can even do a repair install.

I just find it easier to format and reinstall XP ever year:yes:
I have the lightning roadrunner speed now and for some reason I am getting much higher speed than I am supposed to and I am not complaining :D

Bill what is your down load and up load speed?
I also notice my older hard drives have a harder time keeping up with the faster download I am getting and the write speed to the older hard drive.
