Heck, why not get this and use your old distributor. This has worked in my car for over 7 years now. You don't have to change out the resistor wire with this deal like you do with HEI, and you only have one wire coming out of the distributor like it is originally.

Looks interesting, thanks!

Thanks Joe! I wish I knew more about it'll as to why some would point me to distributors that are two and three times the cost of this one!

I think everyone was just giving there opinions, or suggestions, not trying make you buy the most expensive. I think when you ask for help you should be a little more respectful to people who are just trying to help you. Just my 2cents

ya know i wondered if it came off that way and by no means did i mean to come off in a disrespectful way at all.
i appreciate all the input, food for thought and time people took out to give answers.
i have learned a lot in this thread let alone all the other threads i have started here!

i think you misunderstood me questioning people and their choices just trying to understand what makes a good distributor for my application and why some would choose the ones they chose.

anyway, thanks again and my apologies if i came off in any other way than appreciative!

Is this the one? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-850001R/
This is just stock distributor replacement as I see it and would be perfect for my application?
I purchased one of those a few years ago. The first one I installed, the distributor 'wobbled' with engine running. I pulled it out and checked the shaft, it was bent. Sent that one back for another and the replacement failed within a month. The module failed, thankfully that happened at home. I sent that one back for a full refund.

I'm now using a complete MSD system. No problems.

you're kidding@!

Thanks for your reply. I feel if your Eng. is fairly stock you should be fine with any of the HEI's from Summitt or Jegs. $99.00 just seems a little cheap to me for a Distributer. I would go with the GM Performance one, MSD, Mallory, even maybe the Proform. They are priced anywhere from 129.00- 199.00. for the basic replacement version, nothing fancy.
Hope this helps.

i run a msd pro billet dist with a 6a box and absolutly love it. the motor runs so much better than even than a hei. i have also run the msd streetfire hei but im going to get rid of it soon i cant get them to time correctly it seems as they want to run at full advance all the time and yes im saying they as i have had two of them and both was the same way.

difference between the two:

GMPP HEI is usually called the ZZ4 or ZZ502 HEI. This is a really good quality piece with genuine Delco pick-up coil, module and coil. This stuff is much higher quality than the aftermarket junk. The one in my car was new about 1995 or so. It's on its second engine.

The summit racing one is junk then? :)

I wouldn't call them junk. Just inspect it very closely for a bent shaft and maybe carry a spare module.

My experience with the two I had might have been a fluke...

Maybe I would have been better off to just go to autozone and get a stock acdelco unit. :)
Thanks,

Just to add fuel to the fire :D

I'm working on my own ignition system design. It's a hybrid transistor assisted ignition.

It's the best of both worlds. There's two undeniable facts:

Points ignitions are the most reliable form of automotive ignition systems. You never hear "my points left me stranded again."

Electronic ignitions provide easier starting, cleaner, more complete burning of the fuel and reduced maintainence and better peformance.

So I'm gonna combine the two. The points will remain inside the stock distributor. The rubbing block will be coated with special PTFE (teflon) lube for the least amount of friction, but instead of the points switching the coil on and off, only a tiny amount of current will be used as the points will become a signal for a two transistor circuit and the output transistor will do all the work controlling the coil so the points don't burn up.

This design has been around for decades...so you're asking...what's so special about this?

Well, I'm incorporating a fail-safe design. If the electronics fail, the system automatically reconfigures itself so it reverts back to the regular points controlling the coil all with the flip of a switch inside the car. No stranded on the side of the road, and I don't even have to get out of the car, let alone pop the hood.

I'm all for electronics, but remember, it's not if, it's when they fail.

:beers:
