I have installed new big block frame stands in my 68, but the driver side header hits the frame. There is plenty of room on the passenger side. Do the frame stands have a proper left and right orientation,or are they interchangeable? I can't recall seeing an L or R on the frame stand when I installed them, even though the GM parts specify left or right. Is one frame stand slightly taller than the other? I'm hoping that swapping the left for right will solve my problem.

You might have gotten quicker response to this if you had put it in the engine forum and not the transmission/driveline forum.
The mounts are left and right but no l -r on them.
The should have a part number on them if there GM.

There is a left and right, but I believe the bolt patterns are unique, so they can only be installed one way. I ran into a similar problem when I was building my car. Check the position of the output shaft of your transmission. It should be centered between the frame rails. I believe if you look now, you will notice that the transmission output shaft is pointed towards the rear drivers side tire. I am curious to know what you find.

The frame stands I'm using are reproductions, so there are no part numbers on them. I think that they have an L and R stamped into them and I thought I put them on the correct side since they only bolt on one way. The output shaft of the transmission points slightly to the passenger side. I could get it to bolt to the transmission cross member by using a winch strap, but this is what made me think that the frame stands were on the wrong side. Also as I stated, one header tube hits the frame rail on the driver side. By shimming the motor mount about 1/4" I can get the header tube to stop hitting the frame, but then the z-bar alignment isn't correct and would need to be shimmed.......

Mike,

Everything that you're saying sound very familiar. I encountered the exact same issue when I originally built my car. As I recall, I ended up slotting the holes on the drivers side frame stand. It only took about an 1/8" slot at the frame stand to center the transmission. My headers also cleared the frame.
