The switch? Where do the wires go?

Re: Unknown Engine Part - 230 6 Cyl

I believe he was next to the carburetor/exhaust. The wires going to the whip. In the part play set SOL, ENG, REL, SW. My carburetor is a Rochester 1 barrel.

Looks like an idle solenoid that would be mounted so the shaft ( extends from the threaded hub ) would come in contact with the throttle linkage.
If an air conditioned car it would extend to boost idle speed when the compressor comes on.
If non air conditioned car it would extend to set idle on engine start, then retract to drop idle speed ( to prevent engine run on ) when ignition is turned off.

It looks AFTERMARKET by looking @ the finish.

Does seem like a lot of wires for a solenoid ......
You say "Increased idle if turn on."
Do you have it installed ? How about a pic ?

What condition activated it (caused it to turn on)?
turned ignition switch on ?, jumper wire ?, something else

Are you able to set idle speed with it not installed ?

It looks like a CIA tracking device.:D

I install. Is correct? Pic at.
Could be, I expected to see something like that

While walking through the car I realized that performance is improved.
What aspect of performance has improved? Idle? acceleration? shifting?
Do the test suggested by Mike-
(What happens when you depress the plunger with the key off ? Then key on?)
What are the results?
With the key off, move the carb linkage away from the unit.
Does the pin drop out?
Can you push it in?
Is there resistance and a clicking sound or does it just push in easily?

Now turn the key to run position (dont start the engine), carb linkage still moved away from unit.
Does the pin pop out?
Can you push it in?
Is there resistance and a clicking sound or does it just push in easily?

With the key still in run position let the linkage come in contact with the pin.
Does the pin move?

Now turn the key off.
Does the pin retract and let the linkage move slightly?

Where was this car built? I've had some old Chevy's, did a Google search for "Chevy 6 cylinder" for some pics, and there are some Youtube videos but I have not seen that exact setup.
