My 47" Panasonic rear projection TV is finally crapping out. I'm looking to replace it with something about the same size. I've got a glare problem so a plasma is out. Any recommendations on a LCD/LED? Are LED's or 120Hz worth the extra coin? I have an HD PVR box.

Thanks

I don't care for the fake look of 120hz.

It reminds me of stuff that is filmed normal then sped up during editing to make it look like things are moving faster.

have a 52" vizio, played the blue ray, Avitar movie for my family on Christmas, all agreed, it looked like we were sitting on set. I'm sure there may be more expensive, better sets out there, but it blew my 86 y.o. granma away.

55" LG with 240Hz.
Amazing color. Sound is good but not out of this world. May have to spring for a sound system.

There are some great deals on Mitsubishis right now. I just got a 65-inch from Dell- on sale for $1,000...and it's 3D ready. I haven't bought the 3D upgrade stuff, but if I choose to, it's ready (so is my Blu Ray PS3).

recently bought a Sony 46" LCD 60hz (model # KDL-46EX400) based on personal reviews over at AVSforum.com. The living room where it sits gets lots of sun and the glare is minimal compared to the tube TV it replaced. Great picture and I don't notice any blurring during sports. Bought a Sony Blu-ray player w/wifi, but haven't bought a movie yet. Sound is so-so, but I hooked it to the old home stereo and solved that problem.

Have you looked at plasma sets lately? Most have an anti-glare coating on the screen which is pretty effective. Panasonic plasmas are available in 42", 46", 50", and 58" sizes. Limited viewing angle and motion blur common to LCD sets don't exist on plasma sets. Picture on the 1080P versions will blow you away, especially on Blue Ray DVD's, and plasma continues to offer more bang for your buck, IMHO.

Love my 52" Sony XBR! Can't go wrong with Sony or Samsung...IMHO.

Good luck! :D
I thought that too- Got a 60-inch Grand Wega in 2005 and it was great...for 5 yrs.

Then it started to get blue clouds and spots. I searched online and found that Sony has had major issues with it's Grand Wega HDTVs and there was a big lawsuit etc. I will try and join it, but I was tweaked Sony is making it hard for consumers to get their sets fixed, and also that the repair was to replace the 'optical engine' for at least $500...and they haven't fixed the problem that kills them after 5 yrs. I will fix mine, but I got a Mitsubishi to replace it and the Sony will become the backup TV now. I figure that if I use it less, it'll last longer.

I was a diehard Sony guy forever, but this debacle really changed me. I dropped significant cash for that TV, and the fact they are giving people the runaround on servicing these high-priced sets after only a few years of use/ownership is sad.

And Misubishi TV's have problems as well (lots of posts about the Green blinking light of death are all over) due to Mitsubishi using substandard capacitors in their sets.

Good luck with your Mistubishi!:beers:

Great. Thanks.

At least (once I repair the Sony) I'll have a 'spare' big screen HDTV...until they both crap out on me someday! LOL!

Thanks for the heads-up!

I just spent the week watching my dad's Samsung, and I'm about to pull the trigger in the next month or so. My 2nd TV at home is a 21 year old Sony Trinitron, looks as great as the day I bought it. Sony would be my 2nd choice.

Thanks for all the replies, tips and suggestions. So many choices.....

My next door neighbor just bought a Panasonic Viera (720P though) so I'm heading over there to check out the glare. I've had good luck with Panny's but if there's too much glare I'll be going with a 120Hz LCD. I hope I can view them with a non-HD signal as we watch a few channels that aren't HD. The sound system isn't important as I have an NAD/Klipsch/B&W home theater system.

One more question, does anybody know of any TV that will play downloaded stuff through the USB port?

I paid $2250 for this 47" rear projection about 8 years ago. Man am I glad prices dropped.

Depending on your budget, I would buy nothing less than a new Samsung 8000 series LED TV. I recently upgraded from a 46" Sharp Aquos to this new 55" Samsung and the difference is incredible. It also comes in a 46" or 65" version as well.

It has, by far, the best picture I have ever seen on any television, and I looked for a new TV for almost a year (was waiting on 3D sets). I have not used the 3D function yet, but since it seems to be the new standard I didn't want to buy a TV that was not 3D capable. I did a lot of research beforehand, and from what I gathered, the 9000 series (the only model line above the 8000 series) adds nothing but a fancy touch-screen remote and $2000 on top of the price of the 8000 series sets. Yes, I realize there are differences between them, but they appear to be so unnoticeable that it didn't make it worth the extra $2000-for me at least.

Even the older, non-LED Samsungs are nice TV's with excellent picture quality, and the company always seems to be at the top as far as picture/product quality. I will never buy anything but Samsung's from now on, but to each his own.

I also looked at Plasmas, but the picture quality/color did not impress me at all. Everybody has their own opinions, but I would NEVER buy a plasma, JMO of course.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy anything less than a 1080p HDTV. 720p televisions are nothing but a waste of money, and I thought that most companies quit making them. I can assure you that you WILL regret it if you buy a 720p HDTV.

Good luck in your search.

Purchased a Samsung 46" LED 60 hz. from Wal-Mart 6 months ago for $1248.00. Great picture, no heat from the back like my LCD gave off, fantastic picture, no regrets.
