Im going to be building a garage to do my frame off restomod, and after that it will function as a normal garage. How big will be suffient? I was originally thinking 18x21, but then got to thinking 24x24. Could I get away with the smaller size?

make it at least 28' deep. Our old shop was 24 x 32 and 24' deep was barely enough. Our new one is 28 x 40. much better. The extra 4ft allows you to comfortably work in front of the car.

24' x 28' is pretty much the *bare minimum*, if you plan on putting 2 vehicles side-by-side to work on.

If for vehicle storage only, a little less might do...but not to be working on, in and around.

Minimum 10' ceiling, 200A service panel are also recommended.

18'x21' isn't really big enough to park 2 cars (try opening the doors) let alone work on them. 24' wide is probably the minimum width I would want and the deeper the better. 28' allows you to have bench in front of the cars and still have room to work. Build it as big as you can bacause you will fill it up. My garage has grown to 26'x65' and it isn't near big enough and I have a 20'x24' shed out back for my boat and all the other crap!

Man, 18x21 is really small for a frame off. 24 deep will work if you don't have a bench or anything in front of the car. 18 wide I don't feel it will cut it for doing a frame-off - You would be tripping over stuff endlessly. I would say at a bare mininum you would need 24x24 but would go as big as possible because when you start taking that thing apart it really grows.

Good luck.

I lived in a house with a 19x21 garage and I hated it. It looks big enough when you measure it off but the walls will close in on you fast. Like others have said you really need it to be bigger, especially the depth. I understand your space restraints and it can be a problem. If you can't build it any bigger, have you considered building it with a 11' ceiling and putting in a lift? Or maybe an upstairs that you could use as a workshop?
Just some thoughts that I considered when I was experiencing the same dilema. Good luck with what ever you decide.

I'll be another "big as you can" guy. There is never enough money or space so do what you can. Your local zoning regs may influence your final decision, as well. In many cases, it is easier and perhaps a little cheaper to go up (two stories) rather than out. Just think it through as best you can before you start. If nothing else, drive 4 stakes in the ground that will represent the four corners. What does that look like to you? Then go from there. Good luck and post pics.

I have a 24x24 and it is WAY too small.

build the ceiling high enough so that u can have loft storage and be able to install a set of chainfalls to pull and engine with overhead room to spare. 24x24 will give u room enough to had shop spave beside the cars, on one side. my friend's garage is 24x24 but he did not build it high enough.

30'x 50' will handle 2 finished 67 chassises, chassis's, chassi, whatever....plus 2 chevelle bodies on "dog"chassis side by side....enough room to work around, if we keep it cleaned up...the 30 depth allows for workbench, tool box or extra table...also allows for turning cherry picker around with out opening doors in winter cold.....

I'm working in a 24' deep x 30' wide garage with workbench, tools & toolbox down one wall. There's currently three cars and a Harley literally stuffed in it. I have to roll a car out to have enough space to work on the wagon...or anything for that matter. I'm thankful for the shop I have, but like others wish it was bigger.
