sorry not a chevelle but my wife olds bravada (4.3 S10) has been getting harder and harder to start, i did a complete tune up, but the timing is jumpy when i use a light. jumps around 4-5 degrees but it smooths out if i run the rpms up, it's a vortec FI with 150k miles, and i can't seem to set the timing correctly, but i'ts getting worse daily and today it's dying at stop signs, before i tear the front of the engine off, i'd like to know the symptems or an ez way to check it.

Turn the crank back and forth by hand while watching the rotor. You shouldn't be able to turn the crankshaft any appreciable amount before without seeing any rotor movement. 150K, it's probably time for a chain. I just happen to have a brand new McQuay Norris timing chain set that I bought at a swap meet two years ago, still in the box. It's for a small block engine, but I think the 4.3 uses the same parts.
If you plan on going to the car show in Haltom City this evening or tomorrow, email me, I'll bring it there, and it's yours. The car show is at a city park and little league field near the intersection of 820 and Denton highway. I'll drop you an email also.

What year bravada is that?? Chevy switched to roller cams in the V8's and 4.3's in 87.(V6 earlier??) That would mean the traditional timing chain may not fit exactly correct if you keep the roller cam intact. There has to be a thrust button, and unsure if the stock setup accepts a aftermarket gear. The good thing, no worrying about cam wear after 150K

If it is one of the 4.3's that has a balance shaft, then it requires a (very) special timing set.

BTW, does the Bravada burn much oil yet? How's the compression? Not that this pertains to your problem; I, too, have a 4.3 in one of my trucks and I'm just interested in hearing how they hold up over the long-haul.

Good luck!
