Ordinarily, I wouldn't think of cutting holes in an interior panel of my '69 convertible, but since this was an option in that year (U57) I'd like to add it. Does anyone know where I can get the correct grilles? I had this option on a '69 SS some 20+ yrs. ago and as I recall they were stamped, perforated steel.
Thanks,
Rich

I can't answer your question about the grilles but figured you might like to know that OPG is making these now. You could leave your originals "intact" in case you ever want to go back...

The grilles are stamped perforated steel. If you need specs let me know. I have two cars with this option. I might even have an extra set of kick panels. I would have to check and see. Let me know. Hope this helps.

Is U57 the tape player option? Or are you discussing speakers? I thought only speakers in back and under dash-dash should have 2 circular areas of small holes on the top.

Rich, I'll try a couple places down here and see if they have them. By the way, do you know when in Sept. the car show will be at FCC this year?

Thanks for everyone's input.
RickS-I saw the kick panels you mentioned in the opg catalog, but they look too custom.
69SSGA-Would those panels you mention have the grilles with them? Thanks, let me know.
Jarret-U57 is the option code for a stereo radio or tape player with 4 speakers. In 69, there was only one central speaker grille on top of the dash, so the front stereo speakers were mounted in the kick panels.
RickinNC-Thanks for looking, and that's a good question about the FCC show. I checked the MD Chevelle club calender and it's not on it. I'll check further and let you know. Do you get up here often?

If anyone has pictures of the speaker placement, could you post them? I'm trying to figure out where to put speakers in my 71 w/out messing up the interior too much as well. Thanks guys!

Sid, I can tell you this, when you remove the kick panel, you'll see a recessed area in the inner body structure. There is a strip of steel about 1-1/2" wide across the center. I would think that this should be cut out to leave a recess about 3"x6". You probably can use this as a placement guide for the hole in the kick panel.

Sid,

70-72's would not have kick panel speakers. The one exception to this would be if the car dealer was requested to install the old style under dash 8-track player.

From '70-72, if you ordered stereo equipment, you rec'd (2) 6X9 speakers in the rear deck--look under there, there's cut-outs, and (2) 4X6 speakers in the dash.

If you ordered a NON stereo radio, but ordered A/C, you rec'd 2 speakers up front, as the standard single speaker up-front would not work because of the center A/C vent taking up too much room. You could have also ordered a single rear speaker to go with your non stereo radio. I can't remember if it was mounted on the passenger or the driver's side 6X9 cut-out.

If you ordered a non-stereo radio, and did NOT order A/C you would have rec'd a dash pad with a single center speaker.

Bottom line, speakers went inside the dash and rear deck from '70-72 from the factory.

Non-stereo means AM, and FM-mono equipment

Stereo means, AM/FM-stereo, AM/8-Track, and AM/FM/8-Track equipment.

Hope that helps.

Rich, I can't remember the clubs name, but 55-57 Shoeboxs are their thing. Nice small show, good for a Sunday afternoon. I get up there about 4 times a year, lived in Frederick for twenty years before moving South in 97. I have one more place to look tomorrow, let you know if I'm successful with the grills.

Sorry, should'a added my tag line: 71 Convertable. Also has floor vents, unsure if I want to disable them and put speakers in there or not? Maybe if I get a set of panels from an AC car?? Then I just have to weatherproof it.

RT,
I've been to the OPG shop in Huntington Beach (50 mi. up the coast from me and it's a very well organized and professionally run business, very fair people as well.) and have seen the panels with the speaks up close and they are very well done; as if GM had built them as OEM options back then.
They also have plenty of the plain panels available, if you must remain totally original.
Thought you might like some feedback about the custom panels.

Here is an option you might want to think about. Cut out the housing behind the grill. Mount 6x9s behind the grill. If its a black interior you can't notice the speakers with the grills over them. Get another set of kick panels if you want to change back to original. However, the way I cut the back out, if I wanted to make those functional I can just glue/putty the backs together and since it'll be hidden by the grills you won't notice it. I thought it was a good idea since I want something larger than 4x6s and I don't like the way the custom kick panels looked.
