1 week till northern reg. show in ohio and the car won't start. Took it out couple night's ago car got hot, stuck in traffic and it shut down on me thought it got to hot but it wouldn't start back up. trailered it home charged the battery overnight and tried next morning still wouldn't start. Put gas in fuel cell cause thought maybe I was low(it was very low if not out) pulled a plug had spark car started up ran for 10 sec and shut down.wont restart pulled plug no spark. thinking bad coil or MSD going bad. but how to check MSD.

Could be the module inside the distributor. I had one go out in my 72 and it just died driving down the road. There was no sputter, nothing, it just flat out stopped running. Turned out to be the module inside the distributor. Some of them are pretty cheap so its pretty often one goes out if its just a generic module. No problem to replace it though.

I had a new MSD dist go bad after about 50 miles. It started acting like it was running out of gas so I checked all the lines, pulled the tank to check the filter on the pickup & changed the fuel pump & carb with no luck. I put in an old dist & it runs great. At least I hope it runs great to the Northern show next week. Good luck, Steve

well I went down to the garage and pulled a plug to check, no spark,, so I headed upstream to eliminate what I could, to find the problem. pulled the lead off distrib. BEFORE the coil put a plug on end and got it to a ground turned the motor over no spark....does this sound like the control module took a crap in this distib. or is this not an accurate enough test. I don't want to just start throwing parts at it a week before the show. what does anyone think

The link that 68MALIBUBBC posted from MSD has excellent instructions for doing a troubleshooting diagnosis to determine if it is the pickup or the MSD box that has gone bad.

actually if its the coil or the box. have to work a 12 hour shift this morn, but when I get home I'll try that. saw it late last night didn't have time to try it last nite though. hope its the module and hope I can get one fast.Summit did not look like they had one for my distributor. MSD Pro-Billet street version. All I can do is hope I find one in time.
