I understand that with a stroked motor like a 383 for example there can be a problem with clearances between the rods and cam. This gets more prevelant with the longer the rod used. Right? Is the point of contact on the lobes of the cam? Apparently you can avoid excessive clearancing of the rod by using a small base circle cam, right? Can someone explain or better yet describe a small base circle cam to me. Are there any negatives using these cams other than maybe more expensive?

Thanks

No rod length doesn't have anything to do with it. It's how the big end is designed. If you put a 350 rod and a 400 rod on top of each other it will be real obvious that the 400 rod has more clearance near the bolt. A longer arm crank will move the rod closer to the cam.

I have a small base circle cam at 1.030 but I still needed to grind the rods. The best thing to do is buy stroker rods or grind all of yours plenty, even before balancing or mock up.

A good trick I learned is to wrap a tie wrap around the lobe to check for clearance.
