The body and the chassis on the '69 are done and reassembled. I have been considering a head upgrade. Specs as follows:
402 +.030 {408BBC}
Pistons: TRW 2354F30 19.8CC Dome
Deck Ht : .016

Cam: Hydraulic Roller:228/238@ .050 .578/.578
on 112 LSA, Int @ 108CL

Current Heads Stock 290's cut .006
{Have to CC but most likely about 104CC)

{Edited - Forgot to factor in reduced deck ht for Comp. ratio}
Compression Ratio as is w/ .039 Gasket =
Head Volume 100CC = 10.30/1
104CC = 9.91/1
110CC = 9.37/1
119CC = 8.68/1
The dilemna I am running into is all the better heads are 119CC which drops Comp to 8.68/1 I can have these milled to 110CC but will still only get to 9.37/1

Does anybody have any real tested data for GM heads such as 290's with larger 2.19/1.88 valves and mild port work. Given the options {bigger pistons is not one}, reworking current heads seems to be the best way to go.

Down the road, I want to put together a 468 or 496, so was hoping to be able to use whatever I did now on the bigger motor later on. Would hate to cut down a set of open chamber heads only to create build problems later on. There is one head that seems appealing, the Edelbrock Ovals are offed in an angle cut 100CC version that would work well now. Question is would these work on a 468 or 496 later on?

290's w/2.19/1.88's will work very,very well.Just go for the throat cut on the seats,and do not bother with spending your hard earned cash on hardened exhaust seats.You might have to unshroud the valves a little too,but thats about it.The Edelbrock ovals will be fine on a 468 or 496,but save your money..you don't need those,or even a hydraulic roller.

Chris,
The 290's are already done with stock valves and inserts. Had these done August '03. Heads were done complete w/ guides, etc. I had considered aftermarket heads back then, but didn't want to address the compression issue as the pistons were like new. In retrospect, If I have to spend another $400.00 -$500.00 on them, I guess it is still better than spending $1400.00 - $1800.00 on new heads. Just wanted to find out if the valve upgrade works without doing a lot of extra port work? What has peaked my interest are the deals out there on the smaller rec port iron heads, although these are definitely big for my 408 the 290CC to 310CC rec ports would be great for a 468-496. So if I did invest in the rec ports, I could use them afterward. Then again, if the 290 ovals work well with the bigger valves, I could probably use them on a bigger motor also. As far as the Hyd. Roller, I already have it. Decided to go Roller because of suspected lifter bore alignment problems. We were not getting good lifter rotation in the back of the block. [#5,#7] Bit the bullet, have the parts, at least now as long as I run MKIV blocks, won't have to purchase lifters. Even the roller cam I have is probably better suited to a bigger motor but should work fine on the 408.

OK then..my opinion is this: leave the 290's alone..stay with the 2.06/1.72 valves since the heads are already done..believe me,they'll be fine..I run the 2.06/1.72 valves in my 454..ET in signature (and that 12.99 with 2.73's is just the tip of the iceberg with those gears-more to come in spring time)
Anyway,that hydraulic roller and your 290's even with small valves will be quite impressive..

You are probably right. I have really been on the fence with this one and don't want to just throw money in without really accomplishing anything. Common sense tells me to run the car as is to establish a baseline then go from there.
{By the way, I have read your posts several times, the deal with the 2:73 gears, at one point I thought you were going to consider 3:31's?}

Nope..no 3.31's yet,and I might not install them..ever....I've been looking for a "bottleneck" in my combo,and I found it..I won't post what it is until the track opens and I can confirm my results with a timeslip.Anyway,back to your combo..
If you plan on using your 290's on a 468 or 496 sometime down the road,have the big valves installed then,but for now,with the 402,stick with the 2.06/1.72 valves..
