I haven't been a customer of Harold's yet, but as far as I'm concerned, the guy is the best around when it comes to camshaft design, and here's why I believe that:

Since Harold and I have exchanged several e-mails in the past, I told my brother who has a SBC engine in a 67 Chevelle to call Harold regarding a new camshaft since the Edelbrock RPM cam he installed in his engine was a terrible performer as far as street manners go. He was very displeased with that cam. Because of the wealth of information that Harold had shared with me via e-mails, and because I recognized that Harold taught me things about cam design through those e-mails that I've never heard from any "tech" guy manning the phones at some of the big cam companies I've spoken to, I was confident that Harold would sell my brother a camshaft that would improve the overall performance of his street car.

And after my brother called Harold, he told me that he was amazed how Harold took the time to explain everything to him, and now that he has his car running again with Harold's cam in the engine, he is thrilled with the results. He said that the cam Harold sold him has made a night and day difference, and that he only wishes that he had called Harold and purchased a cam from him in the first place, because it would've saved him a lot of time, money, and grief. With the Edelbrock cam he had, the engine behaved like it had a vacuum leak with an erratic idle that was all over the place and would not stay at any one RPM. He literally ripped the engine apart twice trying to chase down a vacuum leak that wasn't there. He also went crazy trying bazillion different ignition timing curves, as well as endless carb tuning procedures to no avail.

But now that he has one of Harold's cams in there, his car runs great and he can finally enjoy driving it. He isn't a member here, so on his behalf, I just want to say a big THANKS to Harold. Next time I need a Cam, Harold will get my biz. BTW, for those who don't already know this, Harold has designed MANY of Lunati cams (probably most of them). he has designed cams for Lunati in the past, and he continues do do so.

There will be no more UltraDyne cams designed. I am doing better stuff now.

UDHarold
Gee, that old fashioned Ultradyne 276/284 FT solid in my 427 zips pretty darn good for me. I got one of the last ones out of the old Harold-run Ultradyne organization.

So is Harold still at Lunati?

Or is he with Ultradyne? why the confusion:confused: is he just a free floating cam guru?

I would like to get a cam that he designed, so I am just wondering where he is at right now.

Neither. He still designs cams for Lunati, but he doesn't work there. I know that, because if you call Lunati and talk to some of the tech guys there and mention Harold's name, you'll find that they know him. Harold has his cam master files, and if you call him to make a purchase, the payment goes to him, and he has Lunati grind your camshaft, and send it to you. I cannot stress enough that not only is Harold a great guy, the man knows his stuff when it comes to designing camshafts, and he has been designing them for both racers of all kinds as well as street car guys for decades. And not just drag racers either. Circle track, boat, mud bog, etc.,etc., etc....

Correct. He's a great guy, NUMERO UNO, that knows his stuff and nothing makes him happier than helping you turn a good combo into a great combo.

Oh, boy. Shoulda seen the guy that flew into the dyno room when my UDHarold equipped motor was "singing".

Pretty sure he heard angels. And apparently, angels like big blocks, Harold's cams and the rest of all of us (the motley crew we are :D).

Not too many like him left. You better enjoy it while you have it.

Personally, I would like to down some Starbucks with him one day, while sharing our enjoyment of classic cars, and all of those memories.

Ok, now I get it.

I was not doubting his expertise. I just wanted to know what company he is associated with that way I can get one of HIS cams, since he is pretty much the cam god around here.

Andrew your best bet is to give Harold a call.....He will steer you right. Just know your goals and combo before calling and leave the rest to the Cam Master. You will be hard pressed to find a kinder person....I'm with Fred, as it would be a true pleasure to meet a person of his caliber and spend a few moments face to face.

No problema Andy. It's all good.

Ditto.

Bump for UDHarold. I spent 40 minutes on the phone with him, and as usual he is not only helpful, knowledgable, but will actually talk WITH you and not AT you. My previous cam was an Ultradyne cam and this one will be a UDHarold cam as well...

1. I like dealing with Harold. Ordered my first cam, lifters, and springs/retainers through him recently. We had two nice conversations discussing--among other things--beehive springs, and how they were installed upside-down in the '70's as a "cheat" for using big springs without machining the spring pockets. It's nice to talk to a guy that actually KNOWS how the cam is going to work in the proposed engine; and he left me feeling confident that the cam--which is about one step "smaller" than I would have expected--is going to meet my needs.

2. If I call him using my cell phone, he USUALLY answers promptly. And, fine, everyone gets too busy to answer the phone sometimes. If I call using my land line via ATT calling card...I get the answering machine; and he--apparently--does not check those messages. There is no way on Earth I can get through to him on the land line via calling card. I suspect--but do not know for sure--that this has to do with Caller ID incompatiblity.

I have personally called Harold twice from Vegas, he answered with no sweat on about the third ring both times.... Wonderful guy, really knows his stuff, taught me a thing or three about cams and I had 0 knowledge of camshafts period. Can't wait to see how my cam runs in my hydraulic roller 496... I dream about how it will sound and act, will keep you guys posted.
