Had the same issue. I was going to use the original as the template for the hole to cut. Got really scared I would ruin a $100 piece so I just installed it without cutting the hole. Removed the air vent going to it and capped it off.

Reason I did it was I saw a COPO 427 '67 original A/C car in a Muscle mag doen that way and figured what the heck. Actually makes the dash look cleaner......and I get enough air from the two side vents.

Just an opinion.....

i dont have an original one but i do have a new reproduction strip from ausleys. i bought this before i decided to change to AC.
Ill probably just cap it off as mike suggested as long as i can get enough air from the side vents. im more concerned with functionality and looks than originality.

Steve,
x2 on what Roger said. If you go to the trouble to install AC, cutting that hole will be one of the easier things to do. You have to make the hole nice and clean because that center vent is right up there in plain sight for all to see. You have the hole in the dash and the center vent itself to guide you in cutting the hole. But more than anything else, you will want that center vent to be functional to cool the car on a hot day.

I just charged the factory AC system for the first time on my 66 last weekend (R-12 freon). The air coming from the vents is ice cold and I think most of the air is coming from that center vent.

The previous owner of my Chevelle had filled the A/C system with R134 and the system did not work worth a damn - temp differential was about 20 deg. I had the system evacuated and refilled with R12 and now get a 45 deg temp differential. I knew that my system had no leaks so decided to spend the money for the R12. Cost me about $70 per pound and it took a little over 3 pounds. But boy, I am COOL now.

Wow! times sure have changed.

I can remember when they sold 1 pound cans in K-mart for $1.99. Stuff was practically free and people thought nothing of putting in several cans a summer into a system that leaked. Now, its like gaseous gold.
