Just curious-wondering if upgraded shoes would make a drum brake setup safe for an 11 sec car. If you read the advertising on the Praise setup, it may work better than disks. Any comments???

Got a buddy that runs lowest 10's in a sprayed BBC '67 Malibu with 4 wheel manual drums.
Does OK, never gotten into the weeds with it but the track does have a long shutdown... ;)

I'm building my car for bottom tens and specifically scrounged some 11" drums for the rear even though a disk set up would have been cheaper and easier. The drums hold better on the line and that was important to me since I will be foot braking. The fronts were converted to standard disks, though.

I have backing plates from a 76 Monte. The drums, wheel cylinders, shoes, hardware and master cylinder for a 76 Malibu with manual brakes all came from NAPA. I have complete confidence in it.

Power disc/drums here and all is fine... know more than a few deep in the 10's with power and manual disc/drum factory style set-ups and a few in the low/mid 9's but said they're about at their limits. (under 150mph)

Sid,
My 67 Camaro ran 10.70's for years with drum brakes. It did have a Dana 60 in the back which had larger brakes, but just the stock Chevy junk on the front. Most of my racing was at MIR which is so long you could almost coast to a stop running 10's, but I did run some at 75-80 and had no problems.

6.26 @ 111.3 in the 1/8th, with 4 wheel manual drums.

I did switch to 11" drums in the rear last year and will be switching to 11" Wilwood discs in the front as soon as I get done with my smashed header repair and transmission upgrade project.

In regard to the Praise dyno brake pads. Those dudes flat WORK!

Back in the 2000 timeframe I had just put my old 383 SBC in the car. Running mid 11's. The car had 9.5" drums all the way around. Power drums at that point though, but with regular parts store pads. The track I ran at the time (Temple Academy Dragway) had a pretty short shutdown. It was everything I could do to get stopped by the last turnoff and after one shutdown the brakes had faded REALLY bad. I put some Praise pads on the front and could then easily make the first turn off if I had to and no more issues with fading.

Drum brakes work well as long as you use good quality shoes. I used to run 11" drums in the rear and stock '64 drums in front with metallic brake lining. Those linings would never fade after 9 second runs, even on strips with short shut down. We used to change front discs in Chevelles and Camaros over to drums, because there was much less drag with the drums. Nowdays good quality disc brakes from Wilwood and others do not have as much drag as earlier OEM discs had.

3 seasons .street / strip on Praise Dyno linings and Drums

as has been said ......."In regard to the Praise dyno brake pads. Those dudes flat WORK!

IMO ....stay on top of brake adjustments ...... and I on stock 66 size 9.5 drums !!

There's an understatement of the year! I used to run there too...if you weren't on the brakes hard you'd be heading back out through the entrance gate trying to make the turnoff!

Drums can work great with right shoes and adjustment.

My Vette has stock 4 wheel discs and those dudes are HEAVY as well as drag a lot. Guess I need some lighter/newer stuff...but they DO stop well...which is pretty important at some of these short tracks!

I am running high 10's on drums. No problems getting shut down, BUT I maintain my brakes by running high quality shoes and high quality fluid.

James wants to know if you're talking about him.............

He says if you are to tell you he can run "low tens" in second gear. :D

You got to come to the track to see it run down it. You still planning on going the 11th with us to reynolds?

Sid,
I have 4 wheel manual drums on my '71. traps 114mph at 3900 lbs.
Run at tracks that have decent shut down areas, no problems.
I had the praise shoes on at one time, no big difference.
