Removing crossshaft on BB

I am planning on installing disk brakes on my 71 with a big block. I have looked through the archives but I can’t find the answer I’m looking for.

How do you remove the upper control arm when the studs are so close to the headers on one side and the steering shaft on the other ? Can the splined studs be removed to allow you to move the crossshaft and remove the control arm ?

Either Al has cleaned house or you didn't look that hard. it's been talked about a lot.

Yeah, you can press those bolts out. You can try a C-clamp. The bolts come right out for some, I bent up many tools getting mine out. The other option is to remove the stuff that's in the way. That's been done too.

Move the steering shaft outta the way for driver side. Pass side, the C-Clamp works good as Tim pointed out and is what I did. You can drop the header or you can slip a dremel and a cut off wheel in there and cut the bolt to give you more clearance. Once the arm is off you can use a small punch or chisel or a short smaller diameter bolt and a hammer and whack em out. Spray em down with PBBlaster or WD-40 and let them soak for a couple of hours before trying any of the above as it will make it a little easier to break them free.

The upper C arm bolts are still available at the Chevy store.

That's exactly what I was looking for ! I like the idea of cutting the bolts back a little - then I can get them off without any problems.

Is there a reason they are that long ?
