Hope everyone had a great winter. Its time to put the snowmobiles away and dig out the car. Dusted it off the other day & took it for a short ride around the neighborhood. The roads are still very cold, left alot of stripes out there. Only looking to do a few changes this year. Hoping to get into the 9's on motor & hit 150mph on the spray. Just ordered a set of 3.73 gears to try 1st in place of the 4.11s I have now. Might also send my converter in to be loosened up a bit. Only sixty footing in the low 1.5's. Also going back to ET street radials instead of the plain et streets.

Questions I have is i think I have some power left in my intake. Right now I have an out of the box Professional Products single plane intake on it that came off my previous 582. Looks like a vic jr. copy. My 555 is 10.86 comp. with afr 335 cnc'ds & a bullet solid roller .731 .729 & 266 272. Also has a Pro systems 1200cfm dominator. Exhaust is 2 1/8 lemons with 4" x-pipe exhaust & dynatech mufflers.
Looking for some input on a better intake. Either a sniper or sniper jr, Super vic., Merlin X, dart or brodix. Leaning towards one of the snipers. From what I've read most are having good luck with them. But unsure if the plenum is to large on the sniper for my relatively low compression & the sniper jr. would be the better choice. All the others seem like viable choices as well.
Wondering also if my intake is the reason my 60's suck or is it from the tight converter. Only stalls 3600 on the brake and flashes to around 5200. Its a 9" xhd low stall from trans specialties and was original bought to use behind my old 582 with the longer stroke & more torque and did 60 in the 1.40's behind it. Thanks for your input.

The Sniper is too big.

Sniper did not work on my 555, x2 on too big, the sinper jr. might but the 2907 454-r victor made over 950 hp on my 13 to 1. The super vic is also very proven- ask Tracey at Sunset. Everything has to be a perfect combo for the Sniper to work IMHO. x2 on the needed porting all though the Reher Morrison CNC Version of the 454-R is very good.

You certainly have some room in the stall to help the 60- should be in the mid-high 1.30's with the correct converter (about 5800 stall if using for drag race only).

Good luck, keep us informed.

My 548 had a SV cnc'd by Wilson when I bought it. I changed a couple thinks with the motor and it made good power for what it is. However, I do believe a ported 2907 or the cnc'd 2807 would make better average power for a typical pump gas 540-565 turning upto 7000ish. I've thought about swapping out the Wilson SV for a 2807, but I'd never know the difference since the 548 doesn't get raced and already has no chance of hooking on the street.

Guys thanks for all the responses. You helped confirm my suspicion that the sniper would be to big. everyone seems to be leaning towards the cnd'c or ported vic's.

any reason u went from a 582 down to a 555 ? did the 582 not go as well with the 4.375 stroke crank less rpm .was just thinking of stepping up from my 540 to 582
Kind of long story on the 582. It did go fairly well, I think 10.15 @ 132 was the best. I took the canfields off for some porting and found all intake valves had been hitting the eyebrows of the pockets in the pistons. So it went back to the builder who has finally made good on it. Meanwhile I decided to screw together a 555 to replace it, that is a little more suited to some ocassional nos use. I wouldnt be scared of the 582, although I would have used longer rods than the builder of this one I have used in it (6.385's). If building another one I would'nt hesistate to skip the 582 & do a 598 with 4.500 stroke. Anyone of these has more torque than I can seem to use on the street, Thats another reason I'm dropping down to 3.73's hoping it wont spin so much.

here is an almost identical engine combo, running a #2907 edelbrock 454-R
