Okay
Once you get the pony cars, sports cars, and factory race cars sorted out
(68 hemi Dart is a race car----not intended for the street)

I still have to fly with Chrysler Corp.
Sure---Chebby did the 283-283 in 57, with their biggest engine
But Chrysler came out with 390/392 in the same year----over 100 hp greater than GM

Ya might want to say the GTO is the first Muscle Car:noway:
the 57 Rebel was the first intermediate with the large engine.

But--for the first (and I still think the greatest) muscle
The Letter Series Chrysler 300 cars
Available in White only 55-56
Black, Red, White thru at least 61
Dual quad Hemi standard thru 58
Dual quad crossram 413 59-64
tho the 65 was slightly detuned---would still run like a bandit.

Do not confuse these cars with the standard 300 cars---which for the most part was just a trim level (62-71)

I had a pair of 440/4spd Chrysler 300s in the late 70s/early 80s
both were 67 with the TNT engines
One had a lot of creature comforts
The other
440/4spd--disc brakes--3:7? posi--taxicab hubcaps--bucket seats--7leaf rear springs---oversize front torsion bars
Not included was
radio--heater--center console--undercoat--insulation

True unpretentious sleeper car (stolen in 89)

HOFFBUG, THAT PACER IS BAD-ASS l:)
MAYBE YOU SHOULD CALL WAYNE'S WORLD AND CHALLENGE
THEM TO A DRAG RACE !:boxing:
The ones from Randall AMC in Mesa Arizona would smoke about everything mentioned here! ;)

Remember AMC won the trans am championship twice in the early 70's

Im surprised nobody mentioned the 69 S/C Rambler. My friend has one and that thing will put you in the backseat. The car he owns was around here all my life . The original owner still lives down the road from me. I remember riding in it when I was about 10 years old.

I remember back in the 90s, I think it was Hot Rod or Car Craft, did a story on the "meanest factory muscle car ever". They picked the 70 LS6 Chevelle. A show not long ago on I think it was Speed picked the Boss 429 followed very closely by the LS6 Chevelle. Those were bone stock.
A friend of mine "lived" on Woodward ave. when it peaked as the Big 3 test track back in the late 60s early 70s. Seen a lot of races and was in a lot of races. He says the baddest factory cars were the 396/375 hp Novas, a lot of the Mopars (the old ugly 62&63s) were baddass. He says the stock factory Hemi Cudas & Challangers were "slugs".
My experience in the late 70s on Gratiot ave. was the 340 6 pack & 440 6 pack Mopars were very fast, Boss 302s ran very well. Most of the other Fords werent s&#t. Never seen a Boss 429 or LS6 then. My buddy's 69 SS396 with headers and nonstock intake ran with the best of them. Thats the car that converted me from a Ford freak to a Chevelle.

Pure factory assembled muscle car:
1970 Buick GSX stage 1
Quick, Fast, Pure Class
Dan

Torque makes these intermediate muscle cars move, so there for,

1. Buick GSX stage 1-1970
2.Chevelle SS454-1970
3. Oldsmobile 442 1970- with a 455! (This one was very fast way back in 1978 when I rode in one!)

Pick your poison, they are all cool!
:yes::yes::yes:
Stage I - 510 ft/lbs torque...
Like the tag says, Boys....

Well, the difficult thing is how do you want to define "factory"?

The 427 Ford Cammer (actually a single overhead cam, not a DOHC) was released in 1964, and subsequently sold strictly over the parts counter. Never factory installed, probably excepting a few Kar Kraft creations. Somewhere buried in my Automobilia collection I have a factory SOHC 427 assembly manual - the book you got with the engine. It showed a 616 hp rating on the 2x4 version on gasoline.
I've seen with my own eyes a DOHC 427 Ford. I can't even describe how it looked. Kinda like a Mopar 426 on steroids. Bigger and meaner looking. I was also told that they only put them in a couple 67 Fairlanes. (actual number unknown) That's why I said that car. I heard this from more than one source as well. I'll have to dig up something on this.

GTO'S ARE COOL, BUT A LS6 CHEVELLE IS NASTIER ! AS TO WHAT CAR WAS THE FIRST MUSCLE CAR, I'D HAVE TO SAY THE 1949 OLDS ROCKET 88.
IT HAD THE NEWEST ENGINE DESIGN IN A LIGHTER BODY.
THE ENGINE WAS AMERICA'S FIRST HIGH COMPRESSION OVERHEAD VALVE V8!

Alan, did it look anything like:
http://www.geocities.com/infieldg/images/64-indy.jpg
With all gear drive and no chains like
http://www.geocities.com/infieldg/images/64-indy-gears.jpg
Then what you saw was the Ford Indy V8 which was based off their small block, but with a smaller displacement to fit the rules. Never made in a 427 size.

The 427 SOHC looks like:

I think I see that it was the single 4 bbl rated at 616 hp, and the dual quad at 658 hp.
