I've read every post I can find concerning removing the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer. Almost all of them say you can disconnect the cable from the back of the speedometer without removing the dash, but I just can't figure out how to to it on my '72 Malibu with sweep speedo and AC. I can get my hand almost to the back of the speedometer, but there's a metal brace or AC duct that prevents me from getting my had close to the clip that holds the cable. I also tried going in from the top by removing the dash pad, but again there is no access from the top. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I really don't want to remove the whole dash just to get to the speedo cable if I don't have to. Anybody else have tips on removing the cable in a '72?

Take care,
Mike

It is impossible from the top, you are right. Underneath, I think what you're hitting is the air duct that goes there to your driver's AstroVent.

You could buy some space by (I didn't see anyone mention the obvious...) dropping the steering column, and also removing the idiot lights (easy once you find the little black covers to remove) and then disconnecting that harness behind.

As said before, the Left side is the way to go. Too many wires on the column Right side I think. Let us know how it goes if you do it...

I need to do the same thing...damn thing is making a ton of noise...tried to reach up, but couldnt for the same reason (A/C) gonna try removing the duct today and see if I can get er done.

Years ago when I was young & agile, I managed to get the cable disconnected & reinstalled. I've tried it since & can't even get close. I do remember that I slid a long piece of heater hose over the cable and pushed it up against the back of the speedo housing. The hose released the tab which holds the cable in place. I had to work at it but eventually I hit the right combination of pushing on the hose & pulling gently on the cable.
To reconnect I believe that I loosened the dash bolts and gave myself room to reach in.

I had to do my speedometer cable last night, Broke right after I told you to think rubber karma?. I took dash cap off to access astro vent. removed screws for astro vent and you can slide it to the left. I dropped steering column down and gently pushed it left. I was able to get my hand right on the back of housing with the extra space made from pushing astro vent over. See if that helps
