Timing cover on sbc, I'm using a good cast alum timing cover & want to eliminate as much cam walk as possible ( solid roller) but also don't want oil leaks. Should I use gasket maker silcon or a gasket??

thanks, George

I use a thin smeer of gasket maker on the block then place the gasket on then put a thin smeer on the cover and then bolt on the cover and wipe up the lil excess asap I do this with oil pans aswell but I only do one side on the valve covers I do the side that the valve cover to hold the gasket in place this method works great with no leaks. hope this helps.

i like to smear ultra black rtv with my fingers on the gasket and let it dry overnight, never any leaks and it doesn't require any scraping the next time you take it apart.

nice to see you are running a real transmission!!!

George,

Use a gasket. Make sure that the mating surfaces are clean, straight and dry. Don't use silicon on the gasket - too slippery, even when it is cured. If you have doubts about the gasket being able to seal, use a good brand of gasket sealer. My preference is K & W Coppercoat.
