i am replacing the floor pans on my 69 convertible and found this strap on this nut busted loose.now i have already did the passengers side and forgot to take a picture or take a closer look at this area.so what i need is a good picture of what this nut should look like. so i can repair this area before i weld in my new drivers side pan.looks to me i can just weld that strap back down but what i dont know is that the set up on there now is the correct one.whats on there now (from bottom to top)is a big flat washer, smaller washer, lock washer and then a nut.is this correct?should this nut just float in there?i can see if this ever got rusted that if it just floated that it would just spin.any info would help me out a ton.

thanks

you can get new gage nuts from any of the resto suppliers. That would be much better than trying to fix a 40 year old one that has already broken once.

Looks like someone had been in there before.

Not too sure of the 68+ cars, but my 66 had a special flat nut that actually was recessed into the bushing.

And----every cagenut I have seen is square---not six sided.

I'll get a pic of the nut I'm speaking of in a bit.

This is a 69 coupe floor support.

I took a picture of the cage nut because people keep asking about them on different
forums, so I figured I'd put this on the site so I can refer them to what one looks like.
There is a square nut underneath that cage, but they usually have a broken bolt sticking
in them. Anyway when you go to fix them, the side of the cage that holds the square
nut will be torn. Because one side is out, the nut will spin. Usually to get at these
it's best to go through from the inside of the car through the floor. There is normally
a hump in the floor where the cage nut is located. If you cut an "L" shaped hole in the
floor about 1/8" deep you can peel it back like a can opener, take your cut off wheel
or Dremel cut off wheel and cut the cage open a little more and get the nut out.

Once you get the frozen bolt out of the nut it's best to run a tap through it, then
put it back in the cage, bend the sides up or weld a little piece of metal in there,
whatever, but make sure that the nut will move around in there without spinning
around and around.

Another view of the cage with the nut inside of it.

Oh I know the one you're talking about. It's a different nut than the others, but I'll bet a replacement cage nut will work just fine.

ya i was thinking the same thing.i would like to try to fix it correctly first other wise i will replace it with a cage nut.

Can't believe I went out in the dark to root thru some junk for this.

These are from a 67----under the front seat----where the little nipple is in the door opening.

Top side----

Bottom side---
This side will prodtrude down thru the support and slip into the bushing sleeve.

I have a couple laser cut reproductions if you haven't already solved the problem. They are 1/4 thick though. I just fabbed new cages when I replaced mine.
If you still need 'em just pm me.

thats the way i was from the factory.with the strap back over the nut its pushed down tight.the thing is that it does spin a little bit but then it smugs up good.i have the pan welded back in so i will have to go with it until i pull the body off the frame and try to bolt it back up.if i have any problems i will just cut the pan, tighten it down and then weld the pan back up.dont really want to do that put i will if i have 2.
