hi guys, well just when you think you've seen everything something pops-up.helped a pal get his big block started today and ran into starter problems.this engine was a running engine in front of a turbo 400,from the casting #'s it is a 78-80 454,so the block is drilled with 3 starter mounting holes, the starter is a delco cast iron nose offset bolt holes. the bellhousing is a 621 housing for the large flywheel and the casting # on the flywheel is 3973457. cant seem to find that # in all my info, but if the 7 was really a 9 it comes up as a 454 wheel.what is happing is the bendix will not engage the ring gear! after trying 2 other starters i removed the solenoid and pushed the drive by hand and it misses the ring gear by about 7/16 of an inch. later in the day i found out that the guy he got the flywheel says that it is from a 78 pickup. i have been doing this for over 35 years and i'm out of ideas. the step on the flywheel that seats the ring gear looks like is spaced wrong to mate the bendix gear,am i missing something?could the stop on the armature for the drive gear be further down the shaft? thanks as always.
