Shafiroff is big business and you know what you are to them..a number only.
One on One with a expert engine builder is the best way to go.
No standing in line, no siting on hold on the phone. etc..etc..

I don't know how far you are from him but if you have time drive up to see him I think you'll be impressed. Don't try to pet the guard dogs though!:noway:
I drove 2500 miles to say Hi, but I was on vacation.

Just saw this thread. Can't believe I missed it!

Anyway, we got our 555 from Mike this past Summer, right after Chris got his 548. I can't say enough good things about Mike from a customer perspective. He's unbelieveably knowledgeable and has the patience of a saint! Between my son and I we about wore him out with questions/requests over the 7 months or so it took to complete the build (we were pretty far back in the que when we placed our order).

The thread I started right after we got the dyno results from Mike tell the story:

If you'd like to know/ask anything that I can help you with to make your decision, please PM me - other than cost. That wouldn't be fair to Mike, since what I paid was based on pricing from a year ago, now.

It was definitely worth paying freight to ship from CA to PA to have Mike do the motor for us! I recommend him highly!!

yeah, leave the "dogs' completely alone. They will not only eat your lunch but will also eat YOU for lunch. ;)

I also will stand up for Mike. Not only is ha a first class guy guy running a first class shop, he has spent untold hours helping guys here.

I've bought a few things from Mr Lewis a couple of times. Great customer service, advice and pricing. I have no doubt the quality of his engines can't be beat.

Mike is great to deal with you being on the west coast others on the east coast seems like a no brainer. You would be going to a shop that actualy cares about getting it right. Mike will give you options on a motor to fit your build and budget and steer you clear of the junk that is out there. I learned about warrantys and big companys with my snowmobile came with 2yr warranty was extended to 3yrs no charge. Warranty works like this when I ride it it breaks or does not work Then this goes on till winter is over and they give it back to me. I store it for the summer then we repeat the process. So ask yourself what is the value of having one of the best in the business build your motor. I always have heard good things about Mike and his work. I myself almost bought one of those Shafiroff motors and decided to save some more cash and have it done by some one who takes pride in getting it right vs mass produced.

scott shafiroff , on the other hand , developed half of the moroso catalog with dick moroso and smokey yunick , raced pro stock in the seventies , made nitrous oxide legit , is out racing his stuff with vinny budano and others every weekend
he probably is not going to assemble your motor though and I have heard some crazy accusations about el cheapo parts in his crate motors

Mike knows what he talks about, I dont build engines for people out of state but if my hands were broke and i couldnt do it i would have a person like Mike do my own engine, thats how much faith you can put in him (i would also refer my customers to him in a situation like that)

Look at photos of his machine work, Just give him a call and speak with him for 5min and kick around some questions for him

He has been doing this for...... (I will let Mike fill the blank in :D)

Oh, and those little guard dogs just look mean, I wouldnt want to see them in person

Mike is good people. We've bought a few parts from him and I've recommended him to several folks for motor builds. All have come back happy!

Is your the Chevelle the one featured in Chevy Hi Performance from around June of this year?? The one I saw in the mag has the same wheels, Blue White scheme, and a TKO 5 speed. Either way... looks and sounds great!:beers:. Here is the question... how much??

Does anyone have a big block from Lewis Racing Engines. I have seen their name on some of your Sig's. Just curious about quality, good or bad testimonials.

I have my eye on a 540 from Shafiroff racing. With the complete motor, 950 carb, hyd roller cam, fuel pump, MSD ignition etc., it runs about 715hp and 675 tq for about $13,500. They offer a 2 yr warranty and free shipping, which is a big plus for me.

With the current economy, work has slowed down a bit and I'm looking for somethin' a little less expensive. Lewis Racing Engines seems to be a prominent name around here so I thought I should look into it.

Let me know what you think of them.

Thanks.
I think you should take a hard look at one of Mikes Lewis"s big blocks, first Mike cares about what hes doing, second he machines almost everything himself in his own shop, except the cranks. I have never heard anyone say anything but great things about Mikes work. Mikes 540s are always well over 700 HP tested on a SF 902, he uses mostly AFR heads, which always make excellent power. Being in this buisness myself I know how hard it is to get employees too do the job the right way, Mikes no virgin here, I just think he has better control over his one employee, therefore a better product. Good luck!

Mike's a great guy. Honest, spends the time with you that YOU need to make informed decisions, while still giving you his opinion.

Yes, motor in my signature was from Mike, I love it. What it doesn't tell you is the long story behind the motor, my planning ahead about 2 years before I ordered it, going back to Mike with each change and getting his input. He probably doesn't even remember my early communications with him - then I finally ordered it from him and he went down the list again.

Plus, when you're done you get all the specs, paperwork, and dyno sheets to document your engine. Just make sure you feed the puppies so they don't nip at your heels if you visit. :D

Wow... Rarely hear of a guy with so many happy customers and Zero unhappy. I already shot him an email to get a quote on a 540. I look forward to speaking with him.

He lives closer to Northern CA. I live just North of LA. Prob a good 600-700 miles away. But good that he lives right here is Cali, that means he is in the same time zone.

Thanks for all the replies... you are all faithful customers.

Damn,, what can I say,,,
Thank you all for the kind comments it really is appreciated :beers:
As Mark said, there are a number of excellent & talented guys on here that do great work & it is a privilege to be included in this group.

We try very hard to treat folks like they matter, listen to their thoughts & opinions, treat them as friends as well as customers, answer their questions & always attempt to do the best we can for them.
Probably not the best way to run a business or get rich but what the hell, it is the only way I know,,:D:D

I do not talk prices on the forum except in generalities & I may not be the cheapest place in the west for an engine,,,
But I have been known to do pretty damn good on parts pricing for folks here ;)

I will be happy to answer your questions & tell you what things will cost when I know what you are wanting
It is then up to each individual to decide if this is fair to them.

In other words I am not in competition with good ole "Joe Smucks Mail Order Parts & Hair Saloon" :D

Thank you all again

If you want more Lewis/540 information than one man can humanly consume, then you may want to try the "search" option. Besides the obvious keywords, you may want to include Rowdy for some pretty well documented details. You may even try pulling my posts (click on my screen name, then "find posts" off the drop menu). Although not Mike's first, my 540 was a catalyst, of sorts, for what has seemed like a steady stream ever since, many of which belong to fellow TCer's.

Start around Oct. 2005 for info on the build itself and you can follow along to the present. Driven daily, be it bumper to bumper traffic or on the highway for hundreds of miles at a time, often in Vegas' triple digit temps for going on 3 years and approaching 15K. Go straight from the street to the strip, laying down mid 10's on pump gas and drag radials.

You're sure to get a good idea of what to expect from Mike, before, during and after the sale, as I had a lobe/lifter failure after a year. All is detailed, and while I didn't instantly receive a replacement (nor will you from Shaf, Musi or GM, for that matter), Mike went above and beyond, to get me up and running with minimal delay and expense.

Like mentioned earlier, $ are between you and him. My engine may have been cloned many times, but I can assure you that no two prices were the same. Too many variables; inflation, brand loyalty, etc....

Aw....his stuff sucks. Prices are too high, you can't get him on the phone, and he won't answer email.......

KIDDING!

He helped me out, and several of my buds. All VERY satisfied.

We are all street driver guys....2 in the nines, 2 in the mid low tens.

I would not hesitate to reccomend Mike!

Ron

Thanks. Yes, technically the August issue that came out in June. Pics were taken at a warehouse near Columbus during the Good Guys show in July '07. Had a 468 then. It's on the shelf now.

600-700 miles is just up the road. After probably 12months of emailing & questions I ordered off Mike a Comp Cams Hydraulic Roller, Morel Lifters etc just to do a cam change then decided I may as well do the heads also so Mike sorted the AFR's out for me. All got sent to Australia, arrived no trouble at all. Mike has plenty of patience because I had plenty of questions which he answered all of plus some.

Mike has a customer for life from me.
Someday I will visit. Maybe when I build the 565 :D
Mike supplied a lot of parts for my 496.
He also supplied alot of time and knowledge with all my questions:yes:. His efforts are very appreciated, and I cannot imagine the hours he spends answering emails, phone calls, pm's, etc. And still manages to build top notch stuff in his free time

:beers:
