After a look around here I found out that the little 307 is a popular engine for ekonomic guys. How many are we? And what is the result of the tips from here? Can you guys who read the tips and followed them tell us that dont know? Good setups for 307s. I undertand it is a mather of what you want whith your 307 but describe how yours work.

Christer,

To most people, the 307 is not a great engine
1. small displacement
2. only came with economy and no-frills in mind.
3. when the 307 was introduced, the 327 was on the way out the door in favor of the 350.

However, the 307 is a SBC, it gets the job done, and it responds well to improvements.
It delivers a lot more torque than a 283 which it replaced as the economy engine in the Chevy line.

The 307 came with modest compression, generic heads, only 2V induction, and a single pipe exhaust. This is what I'd do to upgrade a 307 in sequence

1. Small tube exhaust headers into a dual exhaust with cross-over pipe. A 2.25 or 2.5" exhaust system with free-flowing mufflers.
********This alone will make a huge difference with a small V-8********
2. Replace the 2V carb with a Performer or EPS intake manifold and a 600 carb.
Remember, the 2V carb must be big enough to get the car up to highway speeds so must have large butterflies. A 600 cfm 4V will have smaller primaries and will yield better fuel economy as well as gains from the better intake.
3. I'm not sure of your goal but I do think you are looking for a bit more performance with your 307. You could swap in a small performance cam like the Lunati 60101 and some better heads. Which heads depends upon your budget and availability in Sweden.
Also depends on if you have the short water pump set for 1968 or the 1969 and later with the long water pump.

Tell me more about your car, goals, budget, skill level so I can tailor advice to your specific requirements. I did like the Stras and Stripes Logo in your profile but some car pictures there or here in the thread would be great!

EDIT:
Here is your other post with more info:
"Hi. I fuond a set of 305 heads for my 307. Cast number 14102187. 58cc. Will they give me to high comp?
The shortblock i orginal. The cam is a Comp Cams XE268H.
I have headers and dual 2,5" Flowmaster. A performer RPM and a Edelbrock carb.
Any ideas?"

Good that you have all this equipment already.
Good exhaust system.
What size/model number is the Edelbrock carb?
The cam is right in there.....
The RPM intake is a bit aggressive for a 307 but use it for now.
I have not seen that particular head casting but it does have 1.84/1.5" valves so it is a 4v application. 58cc chamber will certainly wake-up your compression ratio. Probably will have 10:1 CR now

Chris,

He is in Sweden and the 307 has a lotta stuff already
Perhaps with the cost of fuel in Europe, economy is a greater concern

When we bought our '69 el Camino, I was told that it had a mild 350. Turns out it was a decent running .040" over 307 with a Holley carb, hi-rise intake and headers. I think that's about 314 CID. Even with 256-1 gears the car worked surprisingly well. No race car for sure. More like a lazy 350. If you are looking for a nice driver it would work fine and had enough zip to pass when you want to.

I bought a 71 nova from a coworker that I thought had a nicely worked over 350. Several months later my son and I pulled the engine to work on the engine bay and we both discovered it was the numbers matching 307 block. I was surprised because this little engine ran really strong. We decided to take it apart and found it had some .30 over forged pistons and a forged crank. It also had some seriously ported double hump heads that had screw in studs and guide plates. We freshened up the bottom end and installed an Isky 264 mega cam and new lifters push rods and some Harlan sharp roller rockers. Edelbrock RPM intake and an edelbrock carb, small tube headers and 2.5 inch flowmaster exhaust. We run this through a B&M turbo 350 with a 2500 stall, 8.5 10 bolt with a factory posi and 3.73 gears. This little motor runs as pdq67 likes to say a scalded dog. It has great torque on the bottom and midrange and pulls good on top too. We have not run it at the track yet but it will hold its own from stop light to stop light. You would never think that this car had a 307 in it. Imagine the looks we get when we tell someone we just dusted that its a 307. Both me and my son have been called a liar a few times but we just smile and ask if they want to go again.

Rick

I think you are on the right track with your current plans (from your other posts):
-- Headers
-- dual exhaust
-- Comp Cams XE262H (218/224 @ 0.050", 0.462"/0.469", 110 LSA)
-- Performer RPM intake (you could maybe use the smaller performer intake?)
-- 750cfm Edelbrock carb (600cfm would be better, but 750 will work OK if you already have it)

As I mentioned, if you can find some 305 H.O. heads (casting -601 or -416) these would be a good inexpensive choice. If you haven't ordered the intake yet, you could also consider some Vortec cast iron heads (but this would need an intake manifold made to math the vortec heads). I would also recommend at least a re-curve kit for your distributor (or an electronic one like the MSD Ready-to-run).

FWIW, I'm currently running:
-- 307 with cheap rebuild
-- Summit K1102 cam kit (204/214 @0.050", 0.420"/0.442", 112 LSA)
-- Performer RPM
-- 305 H.O. heads (-416 casting) with mild bowl blend & 0.020" shim gaskets
-- Edlebrock 600CFM carb
-- MSD distributor, currently running ~18 initial w/ 10 centrifugal
-- TKO500 (5-spd manual) trans w/ 2.73 rear
-- Thorley tri-Y headers (1+5/8 primaries)
-- Flowmaster 2.5" dual exhaust w/ Borla mufflers

Engine idles smooth but with a little bit of noise, pulls fine from just off idle, but really "comes on teh cam" at 1900 RPM or so. I do not spin it above 5500, but at that RPM, I've never felt the power falling off.

My chevelle started out as a 307/glide car.

Since I've always liked going to the track on T&T nite, I ran it as it was when I got it. '69 malibu, stock and mostly original everything, including a/c. It ran a blazing 21.xx second et on 7 cylinders:D

I put plugs, wires, HEI, 1 5/8 headers, dual cheapo turbo mufflers w/no x-over (turndowns at rear), fixed the dragging brakes, and got'er hitting on all 8. The result was some high 16 second time slips...which is close what my '89 Camaro RS 305/5 speed ran. Not fast, by any means, but certainly respectable for what it is- a small V-8 with a 2bbl, in a big car with a high-geared transmission.

There is *some* potential there...not as much as a 350, but if all you've got is a 307, hey, go for it!

Glad for all responce:yes: I have the 307 in the car as a numbers matching unit. Why not use it? Every pickup or van have a 350... Boring. Just kidding. I´ll bet it is a good engine but I have the 307 so I go with that engine.
I want a engine with some power. And I want a engine that can take me and my family on highway cruises without a MPG that ruin us.
The F**dguys can make the 289 and 302 run pretty good. Why not build a 307 that can beat them in both MPG and power? And funnier:D

Really fun to read all your stories. And it looks like I´m on the right track on my parts. The RPM manifold is a gift from a good friend who send me a Edelbrock 750 with it. Internet is fantastic!
If you read this: THANKS STEVE!!!! Hope we meet some day.

Travis,

My Oklahoma Buddy, where are you at?? He can pick you a cam in a NY minute!

Think about installing a CC 252HE or the 260HE cam and a Q-Jet off a small engine on a Performer 2101 or a Weiand 8004 and a set of cheap headers and you will be there!

And if you want to break into the engine, a set of medium valve 64 cc double-hump heads along w/ either the .015" or the .020" thick, shim headgaskets will pick it up some more too.

I say the Q-Jet b/c you just CAN'T beat one for performance vs mileage after you set the top rear butterfly's to kick in where you want them!

pdq67

PS., and if you are after mileage moreso than performance, these next two CC cams will still give you "spirited" driving over the stock GM -929 cam, then consider either the Pure Energy 246PE or the 255DEH Dual Energy cams.

Also, the Extreme 4x4, X4250H at 111 LCA and the XE249H at 112 LCA should widen the power curves!

Lotta choices here!!

Interesting stuff here.

My guess is that the 283 and 327 supplies dried up a long time ago, and everyone has been using 350's since they were so easy to get.

Also, other than Camaro's, Chevy folks seem to think a 350 is needed for Chevelle and up size cars. This is my observation from my Chevy friends over the years.

Mostly because the 5.0 got popular in the Fox, which can be fairly light, the other world has gotten quite adept at 300 to 500plus hp 302 based motors.

It would seem that with some work, a 307 or similar sized motor should be able to be stout...

I still want a 396 in my Chevelle...

A long time ago, my mother bought a 69 chevelle Malibu sports coupe brand new. I was still in 12th grade H.S. at that time. It had a 307 with a turbo 350 SS interior with the horse shoe shifter and bucket seats with 2:80 gears. After three years she gave me the chevelle as welcome home present from the Navy. I took the 307 change the intake to Edlebrock torker manifold with a 750 vacuum sec., 202 heads from a 302. and had it milled. 327cid/350hp cam. bored 30 over. eagle Headers dual exhaust. Recurved the dis. still used points but with CD ignition system. 2000 rpm converter and shift kit for the 350 turbo. and finally 4:11 10 bolt posi rear. I took the chevelle and raced it the 1/4 mile and was doing 13.2 to 13.8's with open headers, and shifting at 6500RPM to 7000RPM. When I told I had a 307 under the hood, the jaws droped. Today I still have the have same Chevelle only it has a dual-quad tunnel ram 406sbc. pushing 500 horses. And I still have that 307 stored. I had so much fun when 307 was in the car. Oh, I did change the rear end to a 12 bolt with 4:10 gears.

For inserting pictures, there is a button in the lower "quick reply" window which looks like a picture of some small mountains with a yellow background. If you click on this, it opens a window asking for the location of the picture. Try not to insert too many large pictures since some people still have dial-up...

I was going to post your santa photo, but I think this one is maybe better :)

I have a 1975 305 in my chevelle w/headers,msd coil and lighter weights, edelbrock torker and 600cfm carb. the motor makes good power well over stock. I'm not satisfied though i need more power..hehe

My 68 chevelle came with a 307. The previous owner had put 1.5inch headers and a performer intake on it with a 750 vacumn sec carb. The car was stock otherwise. It ran 15.6 with the orginal powerglide. I had a turbo 350 lying around and a 11TCI conveter with those installed it ran 14.90s. Recently I picked up a chevy II and have been warming the 307 up to install it in the chevy II. I am installing a set of TRW flat tops, TFS 56cc chamber heads, a voodoo hyd roller cam (219/227@.050). I am hopping for low to mid 12s with very good driveability from it. The plan is to have it on the road after the new year.
