Still getting errors on ocassional reboot and SP3 can't install catalog files. I attempted to do an XP repair last night and got to the point(C:>Windows:) where it asked for the administrator password. As far as I know there isn't one. This is a computer I did a clean install of XP on and I never use passwords when installing an OS. I can not get past that point.

Last night I did a scandsk and it had several messages that it repaired bad cluster in resto~1.... and a few other resto files.

Any help or suggestions. I really if possible want to avoid formatting and reloading as games(wifes and kids I don't play them) and some other stuff will be lost.

If I reinstall XP without formatting will all the programs remain on there and I just have to re-install them to the same location?

TIA Pete

I would first try and roll back to before you installed SP3.
Is their a reason you installed SP3 in the first place?

If you are a gamer the best thing you can do is have a second computer for gaming and a seperate computer for your work station.

Pete,

There is always an administrator. Not entering a password just means that you can log in as Administrator without a password. When the recovery console asks for the admin password, did you try just hitting enter?

Yes I tried hitting enter and it went back to C:>windows with the blinking cursor. Pete

If you are trying to do a repair install skip the recovery console option. When it searches for an existing installation you will be given the option to do a repair install.

Next time you try this, try typing help at that prompt. I think you were already "logged in" and it was simply waiting for a command. All of the commands available are mostly going to provide some type of assistance with boot type issues.
