I'm replacing the 327 in my '70 Malibu with a 454 from a late 70's truck. It has an airgap intake and an old Carter AFB...will this pose any clearance issues? I'll need to change the oil pan right? And what would you recommend for springs/motor mounts?

I can just about promise you if your car has flat hood it won't shut without a hole in it. My 454 with a strip dominator holly and elderbrock the hood wasn't even close to shutting. But with SS domed hood no problem. That strip dominator put that elderbrock up there to the point my accelerator cable was not long enough!

you should compare a car oil pan before changing, some of the truck pans and large car oil pans have like 3-steps along the bottom of the oil pan - this will not work for you. the stock style pan basically has only 2-steps down along the bottom of the pan,
you can use the same motor mounts on the BB as the 327:yes:

Alker,

With just this oil pan question in mind, I posted the answer on page 3 of this thread. I even showed a pic of the oil pan you need.

Read the whole thread Darryl started.....lotta good info there....that it why it was made a STICKY in the hope that people would stop in and take a look.
Also read the sticky about automotive oils.

327 motor mounts will work with the 454. The frame towers for a 307 are narrower, so are 307 motor mounts.
So 307 mounts and towers will work to get the 454 in there too

Springs
1. use BBC springs that will start-off being rather taller than you are used to seeing a car
2. use BBC springs with 1/2--1 coil cut off
3. SBC WAGON with A/C springs
4. Aftermarket 1" drop springs

TC, it is spelled EDELBROCK

I am doing the same type of conversion as soon as I decide I am done driving it this year. I have a question for a few of you that responded. If the small-block mounts are correct, why do they make these kits?

If I dont need to buy new frame mounts, that is a nice bonus.
:noway:the other guy was asking about a 70-velle.
if you have a 65-velle and are doing the change to BB these mounts will position the engine properly in the frame;
while in the 68-72 they are not needed.

Vince, good catch there!

I think I was reading a thread about a 64 and carried that over to this one. Oh well. I guess I did confirm that I need them either way you look at it. Thanks.

You may never get the answer in this thread.

Probably BEST to start a new thread, title something like
"WHAT BBC INTAKE CLEARS 64/65 stock Chevelle hood?"

Thanks guys. I do just have a flat hood, anyone know of a decent intake that'd be shorter than the airgap?
The edelbrock performer will work just fine even and will give you the clearance you need. They have a stock steel oil pan on summit for like 40 bucks that is identical to what gm had. get that...Get you some solid moroso motor mounts too...any more q's just pm me
