Hey all, I was quoted $350 to externally balance a cast scat crank. 5.7 rods, with speed pro hyper dish pistons. Just wondering if it's a good price. Also, is an internal balance & external balance job around the same price?

Thank you,
Frank

In this region thats on the high side for balancing, and usually external is cheaper than internal. Smallblock 400 's are the only external balanced smallblocks all the rest are internal. You can have the 400s internally to, but stock there external all others are internal which makes their fly wheels and dampners neutral.

that sounds really high!! I use a very reputable company here in san diego and i get the SHOP price of typically 80.00 bucks(ive done 383,350,427,&406) . Most of the machine shops here sublet balancing to the same company i use ,BUT they mark it up anywhere from 150.00-250.00 . So even with the markup they dont charge 350.00 !!!! shop around if you can find other balance shops.

$175.00 in these parts

Thanks for the quick replies. It seemed a little high to me and I'm glad I asked here before going thorugh with it. Jason, I'm about 2 hrs from San Diego and would be willing to drive to the shop you mentioned. Can you please give me their info when you have time? The shop that quoted $350 is the only reputable shop I know of in L.A county and I'm scared to try new places without someones recomendation.

Thanks

Frank,
Some of the Scat cranks need at least one and sometimes two slugs of heavy metal to balance correctly, even the external ones :( This would put the price up around where you were quoted. I have one on the balancer right now that needs one slug in the front counterweight.

I am charging $250 for most basic balance jobs. Heavy metal at $100 per pc.

$125 - $175 for a typical balance. Of course if you need heavy metal or extra work the prices will go up (time = $$). I just picked up my parts from the machine shop today (SBC 400) and it cost me $450 for balancing. The crank was light and needed heavy metal and a LOT of work to get it right. I have a great machine shop though and he called ahead of time to let me know what was going on.

I have a buddy here in Riverside that does all my machine work. I think he charges $150. He builds motors for alot of off road trucks, and drag cars. he does real quality work.

call this place http://jmsracing.com/

or try hye tech 626 855-1154

assuming you live in LA County.

$175 around here as well.

Get's over $200 I may have to add the balance equipment to my shop equipment hoard.

I'm not sure if it's agenst posting rules if I mention who quoted me $350 but it was one of those 2 places mantioned above.

I may have to reconsider the set up
= (
then call hye tech, he does good work and is cheap. I got my shortblock out the door minus cam and oil pump for a grand. I can't imagine him charging 350 for a balance job.

For a 350 or 383? I'd be willing to just go ahead and buy the shorblock.
for a 350 that was without the oil pump, harmonic balancer, and cam and lifters. Thing runs good and if I had to do it again I would spend a little more for a 383 but was working on a budget and figured the muncie will thank me. Sod the owner is a stand up guy. It took him less than a week to finish my shortblock.
