Just bought a 7qts to use in my new Bullet Solid Cam SBC Dart engine. With this "Green Oil" do I still need to buy a bottle of GM EOS for the cam break in or will the Brad Penn Break In oil be sufficient?

If its a flat tappet cam your breaking in then why take the chance without gm eos or cranes superlube engine breakin concentrate which has the same approx lvl of zddp as the eos does for the few $ its costs.

A bad/wiped out cam/lifter/s durring breakin or anytime after breakin is not fun to deal with which can trash your motor loosing a lot of money not to mention all the hastle & time to fix it .And if the cam did go bad you would not want to say to your self later on GEE,if i had only run the gm eos maybe the cam would not have gone bad.

When it comes to breakin in flat tappet cams you always want to error on the safe side and do everyting you can to ensure its prelubed properly when installed with the grey moly lube like crane sells. You should also be running an oil that has a good zddp lvl with some gm eos or cranes breakin lube in the oil too,you should also run an oil with good zddp lvl or a zddp additive in the oil post breakin too.

Just my 2 cents on that.

Scott,
I would not skim on a few dollars after investing close to $10,000 in this engine. I just did not want to be an "Overkill" with to much ZDDP, and Zn & P, etc. Not sure if the Brad Penn Oil plus the EOS would fall into the danger zone of having too much ZDDP.

Hi Dave, I REALLY DONT THINK GM EOS WONT PUT YOU INTO OVERKILL ON ZDDP FOR JUST THE 25-30 MIN FLAT TAPPET CAM BREAKIN PERIOD IF THATS THE TYPE CAM YOU HAVE WHICH YOU HAVE NOT TOLD US YET.

But there are some zddp additives that have considerably more zddp then gm EOS has that could possibly hit that OVERKILL lvl if we actually knew that lvl would be .

With all the zddp info and oil related data/reports/studies/etc i have been involved in over the past couple yrs i have never seen /read/or heard what the overkill lvl would be when it comes to zddp for flat tappet cam breakin or ongoing flat tappet cam protection,it seems a high lvl of zddp is the overall opinion for safe breakin of flat tappet cams, thats what i have seen.

But i have also read a few times from a few people that they thought too much zddp could be an issue long term with absolutely no test data of any kind to back that statement up.

But for flat tappet cam breakin i dont see how using some gm eos could hurt anything ,thats what i have been using for 37 yrs with all the flat tappet cam installs i have done and its not let me down thus far, thats all i ccant tell you my 1st hand exp has been with gm eos and flat tappet cam breakin.

For ha ha's why dont you call the phone # on the b-penn site and ask for the zddp lvl of their breakin oil and get back to us .

Also,i tested b-penn racing 20w-50 2x and both times it came in at approx 850ppm on zddp so i know that oil is low on zddp, thats for sure but i believe the p-penn site states thier breakin oil has high zddp lvl but what that lvl is i dont know, will be interesting to see if they wil give that nfo, they would not tell me when i asked & thats when i tested the p-penn oil abd found out why theu would not tellme becasue the zddp was low which they didnt want me to know.

But that was a yr or so ago and since then b-penn has updated thier site to really adddress the zddp thing so maybe they have in fact increased the zddp lvl in thier breakin and reg race oil too ,so who knows at this point, maybe someone else will have thier breakin and reg race oil tested,i dont have the time and $ at this time to do it,but maybe in Jan & Feb i may have the time & $,i will have to wait and see on that one.

Hope this helps you out & good luck with your cam breakin.
