what does the other party GAIN by going to Ben's 454HO?
Its complicated. The car that this motor is currently in is for sale. He is not likely to get any more money for the car with this particular motor in it, than with any other freshly built big block.

The owner also happens to have another vehicle, a 67 chevy SWB show truck, that has a freshly built 396/402 in it, that engine is very mild, as that truck is a cruiser, and he now regrets after building it, that he built it too mild.

The idea is that he would put my 454HO into the show truck, as it will still be nice and mild idle with the roller cam, but plenty of power to go behind it- but not "too much" as it really is a cruiser.

The mild 396/402 will go into his car for sale, and the 468 will go into my elk.

The 049 heads on the 402 will be swapped onto the 468, and vice versa with the peanut port heads currently on the 468.

Again, this is all still very much up in the air, On my part and his part... But so far we are both actively considering it.

Not sure Ben...the power will be up a lot, don't think the CR is what you're thinking
Just beware those big cam numbers and your now mild 3.31 gearing......
KEVIN's cam may or may not be the one to run now for your car. You considering a different grind is good. Your extra cubes with the 468 will tone it down a bit. Again, that gearing thing. Got a working rev limiter?

Without doing the math, the 781s vary in chamber size.....I'd bet the planet that with the .210" domed slugs, chambers 119cc...you'd still come in around 9.8:1. What I'm saying here is that your RECT PORT OC heads should have the same chamber size (approximately) as the 781s. Maybe a tad more Zero-deck. Let me run some numbers tomorrow..... Remember, the pistons give a bit over 11:1 with 106cc chambers.

Gears still havn't happened yet... I want to learn to do them, so need extra time from either dave or Doc to limp me through it- Got em sitting on my shelf, So sometime over the winter months...
Although... I may have to reconsider if it will interfear with my performance asperations. I don't want it to be a dog with the wrong gears.

Looking at posts by others, Marks solid flat tappet might be a good candidate for this motor, although it does say recommend 3.73 gearing... hmm

What cam does gotago have? I know he went stupid big
I can't keep all this straight.....who has what

Well Ben after being with Dave today doing my gear swap with him I learned that there is a lot to learn about it. Fist off its a lot more work than you think second is you need a few special tools to do the job and crushing the crush sleeve is a biatch. Although I think I could do it myself only if Dave was there with me and if I had all his tools there also.

It's not something Ya just learn and then go do it. There is alot of nuance to it to get it right. Be3sides the tools to do it right, you need to be able to read the pattern. That in it's self is the real problem, I HAD TO CONFER WITH HT e surgeon to diagnose the patient today. Pinion depth, back lash, street car, race car. The sheer amount of power the car has..................

Who says big is stupid?:)

586/600 243/251@50 110 LSA 26/30 lash

SOMEONE please get this cam in the 12s!!! Kevin doesn't count, he's running a different LSA.

Gene/427L88 has run a 12.24 @ 118.75 MPH with that cam in a 427
He has the 110 LSA too

IMHO and experience,it would make a great cam for a 454 HO motor..even if it had 3.31-3.55 gears

AHHH, hope for me yet:D

Ben, interesting plan. The 468 sounds like it would be a better match for what you are looking for and you know you can trust Erik. Too bad you cannot talk him into trading cars:D It's a tough choice though, you have a lot invested in your 454 and with a few more $$ it will run just as good as the 468 and have the 4 bolt mains too. Which ever way you go will be an improvement for sure:thumbsup:

I think maybe i gave the wrong impression of what i was after here.... I didn't expect to just learn it in 30 mins and go setup shop or something...

I just want to get my hands dirty and do more than just drop it off and pick it up done later. Can't learn much by just writing checks.

When darryl did my 4.10s the diff was under the car, and it was hard for me to really see what he was doing, hell he did all the pinion stuff while I was outside... I just want to have a closer look at the process and if possible Do some of the work this time.

Thats all...

Loader1 and I switched my 331s to 373s in about 4 hrs with the rear under the car. I had never done any gear work before so it was a real learning experience for me. Kevin's right, crushing the sleeve is a mutha! I don't think I'd ever try it by myself.

Darryl was under my Elky 15-20 minutes tops IIRC. I think the 2nd try the pattern look great. We had to hurry up and get out from under the Elky because Brett was drinking all the beer!

The reality was the beer took an ass-whuppin from all in attendance
