My setup is 9:8 comp 396/now 402 basically stock with a mild hyd perf flat tappet perf cam, tweaked q-jet,warmed over ign system, stock ex manifolds, 2.5 " head pipes,slowmasters(LOL!!!),2.5" tailpipes,3:31's/m20/26" tires.

I just went 193 miles (approx 60 miles were on the interstate cruising at 65mph @ 2900rpm) & the other 133 miles were in town stop & go whicle driving to local car cruises/shows) on 14.4 gals fuel = 13.4mpg.

That 13.4 mpg also included 1 i cant resist blowing off my friend in his 5.0 stang with slowmasters & 5spd by twisting my baby rat to 5,500 rpms in 1st/2nd/3rd gears before backing off after i got into 4th to make sure he was left far enough behind to embarass him. Yeh i have more cubes but my car is also substatially heavier too evening up the power to weight a little but likely not all the way. But it was fun anyway to see the FORD QUICKLY fading in my rearview mirror.(LOL!!!!)

I thinks that's not too bad for no o/d trans with a mild 396/402 or maybe it isnt which is why i am asking what other peoples mpg is with their non OD setups. But i know i could get 14+mpg in mixed driving if i removed the hd/ac fan clutch that is locked up at lower temp for better cooling and reinstalled the std duty fan clutch that isnt locked up as much. I bet i could even get maybe 15+ mpg if it was just over all the road cruising on the interstate at 60-65mph tops.

But is the mpg i am getting really not the good for the setup i have,i think its decent but maybe not. My friend has almost the exact same setup in 70 ss with same comp motor/cam/tweaked qj-et/gear/m20 and headers for better breathing and he said he got approx 10-11mpg when he checked it in same approx driving cond as i was driving because we frequent many of the same shows/cruises.

Scott my speedo is not calibrated and I have only tried to approximate my mileage once. with my AC running on a 50 mile cruise I got 6 MPG at highway speed.(50 mph)

I have yet to do any real tests because I never drive my car around under normal conditions for any long periods of time but I fill my tank, drive 40 miles to the track, make 3 passes, and then drive 40 miles back, drive it to the same gas station and fill up... It'll take 8 gallons. I figure it if you take away those drag strip runs that has got to be over 13mpg. Not bad for an untuned street car that traps 119.5mph on motor. TH350, 3.92's and a 3500 stall.

On my last trip from Mukilteo to Quincy Wa.on I-90 I averaged 16.8 on the new 383,slightly down from the old 350 but with the 350 tune still in the carb(650 spd demon dp)
1-1 high gear(Richmond 5)
3.31
235/55/16(26.1) tire
averaging 65 mph(mostly:D) at 2800 rpm
1 5/8 headers
3 inch with x pipe(gained 1 1/2-2 mpg on the 350 with the x pipe)all the way behind the rear wheels delta force 1 chamber muffs.

6.7 mpg. I did see 9 once when i was real easy on it for the whole tank.

+.040 383, AFR 195's, comp xr288hr, holley 750hp, th350 for now, 373's. but it sure is a fun trip wasting all that gas. I just can't seem to keep my foot out of it for too long.

I’m good for about 9 – 10 mpg. That’s driving around town. On the highway that jumps to a solid 11 mpg…..

3.08 rear end, 1:1 5th gear w/ 27” dia tires and 93 octane. Solid roller, carbureted 548” big blocks are not noted for their fuel economy. :D

ummmmmm Mike, is that like a baseball player adjusting his cup? I'm guessing since you're in Hawaii you wear speedos quite often? :D
No Bob I haven't worn those since the high school swimming team. That would be scary now.

12mpg if I drive nicely on highway. 10 or so usually though.

With the 1:1 fifth gear ratio in my Doug Nash 4+1 5 speed and a 3.00:1 rear gear I averaged over 16 mpg on a highway/city weekend trip to Moncton new Brunswick a couple of weeks ago. That was turning between 2500-3000 RPM most of the way.

Giuys, keep the fuel mileage & setups comming.

And thank's to the people that already posted thier info because its fun & educational to see what setups are posting what kind of mpg #'s tat may gine people still in engine building stage for street setups a rough idea of that fuel mileage thier setup may get.

My mild 396/331 gear with m20 doesnt llok to be too bad at 13.4mpg with mixed driving and hd fan clutch. But if i were to remove the hd fan clutch thats locked up more for better cooling and re-intsall the std duty fan clutch that doesnt lock upas much along with just open road /interstate cruising i bet i could hit approx 14.5-15+mpg on a good day crusing at 60-65 mph which i geuss would not be too bad for what the car is with no OD trans. But what do you guys think,is the 13.4 mpg my setup is getting about where it should be for what it is? (My full setup info can be seen above in my 1st/original post to this thread.)

Keep the info comming.

I've gotten 15mpg with my EFI ontop the blower. I can still work it msore and tweek it to get possibly 16mpg and thats with a 29" tall 255/70R15 and 3.73 gears. It does pretty good in town to since its not loading up at idle.(14.1 A/F ratio idling)

Im happy. But i wonder what 3.42 gears would do for me? maybe hurt my ET a tenth but gain a mpg or 2? The blower might want a higher gear anyways.:D
