Side Pipe Nova (need opinion)

my brother is thinking of running a side pipe exhaust system on his nova. i already warned him about burning his leg, but he insist. we saw the Patriot system in Summit, it says it has a fancy glasspack-type muffler in it. now, i've always heard glasspacks are really bad for performance, and this car will be a go-fast car so performance is a priority.

if you want to see how they look try to find a pic of a motion nova. although i probably wouldn't do it myself i love the look of the motion cars with the stinger hood, torque thrust rims and side pipes. mike

No, this isnt a Nova, but it IS a motion car.

Motion used those kind of side pipes; I cant recall ever seeing those shielded sidepipes on a motion car. TO me, it looks like the "motion pipes" are "just pipes"- doesnt look like a whole lot of muffler is going on! Looks kinda cool, but they were optional even in the '70s

Like you said, those things are really just an oversized glasspack. They wont add anything performance wise, and Id bet they actually LOSE performance.

personally, i wouldn't do the side pipes. side pipes are for street rods, not muscle cars. look totally out of place. if you want an exhaust that exits before the rear wheels, i'd do a dual side exit style, where a tip peeks out from under the car, just before the rear wheel on each side. a hot car with 3" pipe poking out before the rear wheels is about as bad ass as it gets

I would try hard to talk him out of them. In my opinion side pipes only belong on a Vette, and they should be the stock GM ones not these type.

get a regualar exhaust system with some cutouts after the header collector.
