I swear I'm not an idiot. But I may be wrong. I'm trying to remove and replace the external voltage regulator on my '72 (with a 402) and can't see how the %&##@!! the plug releases from the "F" terminal. Any tips would be more than appreciated.

I'm going to go find my tools in the yard and apologize to my neighbors for the language now.

i have a 67 it should just slide out. no clips. do have a photo to send so i can see. just to make your not missing anything
I'm pretty sure my 70 has clips holding it to the plug. I just slid a small screwdriver in to push down the clip and just slid the terminal out.

Is that the "F" terminal, or the "Fing" terminal, both have been troublesome to me b4 :D

Well my suspicions have been confirmed, I'm an idiot. I overheard my wife talking on the phone with my mother-in-law, which she does immediately after every one of my tantrums. They both find humor in it for some sick reason.

Apparently, when I'm really pissed, I do some quasi-Frankenstein impression, where I stomp walk stiff legged with my arms out in front of me. Only difference is, I lay out an endless string of expletives with no decent words in the mix.

Worst part is I still don't have the plug off. I'm getting ready to cut the damn regulator off the harness. I have a Dremel and a Sawzall, any preferences?

About this time is when my wife comes out, looks at it and CALMLY unclips the part, smiles at me and walks away. I have a broken hammer handle screwed to the wall to remind me to chill. You do sound pretty entertaining.....:D

Torch always works well... :D

Honestly, its been a while... Is there a plastic piece with the terminal "letters" on it? Kind of goes under ALL 4 terminals... I think that gets pushed down... I sem to recall a "tang" on the connector being held in by that piece

Tony, there's a plastic "gasket" with the numbers 1-2-3-4. There appears to be a metal tab on the "3", but I can't figure which way to push it. If that's even my nemesis. Can hardly see, my wife is holding the flashlight but three seconds into it she's talking about the neighbors new hair-do and the light is beaming on the underside of the hood. Gawd I love 'er!

See that plastic bar above the 4 male contacts? Lift that entire plastic bar up and pull the plug out. That bar is there to prevent the plug from accidently coming out. It works very well. In 40 years of wrenching
I have never heard of one coming out by accident.

Me, I just throw stuff and curse a lot. :boring::boring:

& wait 'till you see the tini tiny little small piece of plastic that was holding you up!
boy is it gonna make you mad......better hide all your 'good tools' so you don't lose them in the yard.

I'll second the taking off the complete regulator and disconnecting it. you will be able to see everything so much easier. plus, it is only held in by two bolts. it only takes about one minute to unbolt it.

Finally got that son of a turd off. Opted for the rubber mallet vice the sawzall, did the trick.

Question two; do these newer regulators require the resistor? Can't find a new one at the local parts store, they don't even show one on the computer that can be ordered.

Dean, that's probably sound advice, but I opted for this muscle car over stamp collecting a while back. I'm no quitter. Don't worry, I found all my tools and the neighbors still love me. I'll be fine.
