Cannot(no space or equipment) build my next engine. So I am looking for a shop to do the work for me. Saw an ad at atco for a race shop a block away from my house. They offer what seems like a good setup for $3000.
Panther 350 HP
Street Torquer

Completely Engineered No Guessing

Balanced and Blueprinted for Reliability
Dyno Tested Design

Only $2995
Sportsman II Heads 64cc

2.02 - 1.60 stainless steel valves

Custom designedCam

SpeedPro 9.5-1 pistons for pump gas

ARP bolts on shotpeened rods for high strength

Dart intake manifold for power and torque

Decked to 9.00" optimizes compression, controls detonation

Crank Stroked and Indexed to ensure all cylinders equal

Chrome Valve & Timing Covers

Complete from intake to oil pan, less carb

Options available

If the specs did not come up, it's a 410 ft/lbs of torque at approx. 4200 rpm and 350 hp at 5800 rpm. See lmengines.com. Just curious if this seems like a good package for the ingredients.

Overpriced for a 350 IMHO
I built my 454 for $2500,and that included a core.
You could get 350 core, find a good machine shop, rebuilt it with flat tops, and run Dart heads or Vortechs, and come up cheaper,or just buy GM crate motor.
Chrome valve covers and timing cover cost about $25 at PAW for a SBC :D
No added value there.

true. I built my first 350 for 1900. A good engine too. But this time I have nowhere to build or install said engine. Hence the search for a shop. Still in the thinking stage though.

with it being decked, balanced and crank indexed, it don't seem to bad of a price...what kind of warranty? I build my sons 355 w/vortec heads for right at 1900...its not balanced or decked or indexed...if'n ya add 500 for that,,,then they make 500 for building it...not to shabby

Check out Windsor Automotive machine in Hightstown NJ, 609 443 3592

We can build whatever you want, short block, long block, or complete carb to pan, tailored to what you want to use it for.

I was in the same boat. ( actually did the install one man in the tiny garage, which is why my pan is leaking I beleive).

Anyway, I spec'd my own motor and had it done and assembled. Didnt need an align hone, although studs were recommended and added. Bored, decked, two cranks checked, one ground .010", rods checked , rebuilt w/ arp wavelocs, small ends rebushed, balanced assembled, and it was around $1600-1800 labor. ( we did a barter exchange so dont know exact.)Add $1000 in parts. That a stout 427 rat, sbc stuff will be much less.

So when Brian says, "whatever you want", I like that approach. Design it, take input from the machinist, and have them custom build one.

if you're not sure as to what you want, have Brian build a replica of his.

Is $3500 alot? Have Winsdor quote you on one? Shop around.

Since you were asking about a 427 earlier, I used a 'better' $300 old #6223 425hp Vette crank. It looked like a turd, but was mint. Reused my L88 rods. High dollar was SRP slugs and rings ( near $650). The motor used to see north of 7000, now I try and be more sane. An overkill set of 7/16" rods is around $450, but I really do think good 3/8 rods would be fine. And you can use hyper pistons which are WAY less, but, being old school, I liked forged. TRWs would be less.

So lets see $200 rods/$400 block/$250crank, $375 Hyper/TRW forged slugs, cam'lifters $250, misc parts $275, amd maybe $1200 to check, machine, assemble. Short block only. $2900 est.

NO CHROME TIMING COVERS ALLOWED!

One, I agree I hate chrome timing covers. Second, for Brian, are you the owner or employed by windsor?? Or have you dealt happily with them in the past. Reason I ask is that I have little time to shop around. The few places I've spoken too have asked to see the car in person and I just don't have the time to get down there when I'm available. Anyway, a hearty recommendation is better for me than searching the phone book for a shop.

Paul is the owner, i work under him. Most days its just me and him there working, but his son and a few other people work with us from time to time.
If you need to see a "business card"...i'll fire it up for you!

we're on route 130 on the northbound side. We're about 30 minutes away from trenton.

Have you been to Englishtown by the 130 route to get there?

Call tomorrow and ask Paul for directions, he's better at it then me, i dont want to get you lost.

Just a suggestion, why don't you buy a GM 350 HO motor. They are rated at 330 horsepower but thats with gm crappy manifold. I've seen these babies push out 370 horse power with an rpm air-gap intake and a 650 demon. Just buy the long-block for 2300 bucks, and your in business, those vortec heads are sweet.

Back when I dropped my junk 301 in my car after my 350 bit the dust, I used a stout, low-hanging limb in my father-in-laws front yard right off the curb to pull my 350 and then install it..... Drove her to the limb, and rolled her out of the way sorta deal.....

And I put the 301 together in the back of his old Chevy P/U so I could move it easily to hang it using a really old, but still workable chain hoist..

Then I rolled my car back under it again and down she came!!

My F-I-L was kinda supporised when I came in after about 2 hours or so looking for a drink of water and he asked me how I was doing AND I said, I'm about ready to fire her up!!!!

What was fun was me lifting my 350 shortblock out of the back of his P/U by myself when I got it where we lived when at that time I weighed all of 135 to 140 pounds!! But I was working on the RR at that time so after moving ties all day, I was tough as nails...

He, He, I could pack a 200 pound keg of RR Spikes back then but NOT easy, now look how time has past...
