:( Sorry to see that Jeremy.
I've got an extingisher in the garage but haven't taken the time to mount one in the car... sounds like your ordeal taught us all a lesson.

Glad you weren't hurt too badly and that you saved the house from catching.

Damn Jeremy, that really sucks, so much for cruising the blue bu's together this summer. What caused it? Was it running when it happened? As for fire extinguishers I have one in the car and one on each side of the garage, never have enough though.
Rob
It's down but I wouldn't count it out! I called safeco tonight and they can't get a guy out here until Monday afternoon, so we'll see what they say. It was being started/sputtering when it happened. The guy said "it should be covered".

If I had a fire extinguisher I could have put that bad boy out in a second, no doubt. You can bet your ars I will be buying a few of those.

I'll be wearing long sleeve shirts for awhile! After washing repeatedly I was finally able to get the burnt hair smell out of my arms. :D

REALLY Sorry to hear that man!!! I had that happen many years ago on my '68 Stepside. A fuel line popped off while driving and was squirting on the starter (292 straight six). Burnt the wiring harness and blackened the hood a little, but thankfully with the engine not running the fuel pressure bled off and I was able to get it out pretty quickly with sand and dirt from the side of the road. I was driving my girlfriend into work and then continuing to my uncles to do some work on the truck to fix some of these issues! Good thing is that I had a nearly complete donor truck that I just pulled the wire harness off of, properly fixed the fuel line issue and I was back on the road. Albeit with a slight area on the hood that was blackened.

Glad everyone is okay!

So please tell us how this happened so we can all learn from this unfortunate incident. I hope the insurance guys are helpful. Good luck on the repairs.

Jeremy,
Sorry man. That sounds like it was close. I had the same thing happen a few years back so I know how you feel now and at the time it happened. Wouldn't wish it upon anybody. Let us know if there are any parts we might be able to gather for you up in the North end here and we will bring them down to Portland with us for you... Sorry again

Jeremy- That's really sucks. We hope everthing gets taken care of for you and you can get the car back together soon. Let us know if you need anything.
I'm sure that between all us TC'ers there are a few extra donor parts to help.

WOW Jeremy. I'm glad there was no more damage done to you. Let us know if you need anything that the ins won't take care of. I'm sure there's a few 'extra' parts laying around.

Talked to the adjuster today and he said there is a Safeco body shop in town. He doesn't even have to look at it, said just to call them and have them pick it up. I'm fairly optimistic at this point. I emailed a guy to see if he knows anything about them.

I also asked him about all the aftermarket stuff I have, he said basically it would be up to me to tell them what to get if it was burnt beyond recognition.

I pulled a valve cover off to give it a look see and the rockers look good, just a cooked coat of oil on the surfaces that wipes right off. The heads appear to be fine. The worst of it was on the rear of the carb and the distributor. The rear of the carb is completely melted. The front is just kind of sagging a bit.

Dave, don't worry the GTO isn't getting neglected, I am actually backed up with things to do on it. This weekend would be a winner except I have to work on the wife's beetle. If anything was going to burn up in the driveway why couldn't it have been that?

.... now, about that blower that was burnt beyond recognition....

(kidding... kidding...)

Aw, jeez! I just found this, MAN!, that sux! So, you took a sawzall to your car? Ugh! I have a fire extinguisher in all of my cars, but, unfortunately, it took a fire in a car I bought for my daughter to get me to equip them for a fire emergency. If you need any help getting things back up and running, shoot me a PM, I'll help. I'm just 30 minutes away.

Thanks Frank! Hoping the insurance will put it back together 100% but if it need be I might take you up on that. I'm usually wrenching solo.

Tow truck just hauled it off 3 hours ago or so. The place I called had the truck there in about 10 minutes. Whenever I need one its never that fast!! I took a pic of it being towed off but haven't downloaded it off the camera yet.

Anyway, I was talking to the guy on the phone and through our conversations said he had a 69 chevelle. The guy driving the tow truck who works for the body shop said he has a 67 chevelle and a 69 camaro. I think it will be in good hands!

To look on the bright side, it's really not THAT bad. I mean it could really be worse. Might be time to really take it to the edge of streetability. Sheetmetal dash, painless wire loom, fiberglass hood, new carb, and distributor. Make it Your racer, and drive the Goat.

You'll be back, I know You will.
