Ya, it's no wonder we get the impression that the lights don't go all the way to bright when we talk with some youngsters. Ever try to get one to make change when they punch the wrong numbers into the cash register? They can't do it, no way, no how.

I did all those answers in my head.

I was doing tougher problems than that in 8th grade.

Try giving them an odd ball amount to get the least number of bills and coins back and watch there face.

IE; sale, $27.63, you give them $33.13. Your change, 1. $5 bill and 2 quarters.

That test must be the bare minimum for some state. In 11th grade I was taking Trig and beginning Calculus. I'm not sure if I still had to take a standardized test for a lower match level or if we took once specific to our level.

Then again I passed the California High School Exit Exam in the 9th Grade when I was chosen to take the test before it was implemented and got 90% or above in every subject. I wish they had just given me my diploma right there and then.

I'm in 11th grade myself. In MI, in 9th grade you have to take algebra 1(required) and geometry in 10th(also required). In any grade you can take Algebra 2, but its not required. We don't even have to take the SAT. Just ACT and MME(Michigan Merit Exam). However, the current 10th and 9th grade classes are required to take 4 years of math. They changed it. For my class, only 2 years was required.

Having just retired from "education" I can probably explain this....... Thanks to DUBYA we have No Child Left Behind. Part of this mess is the districts must do testing to keep track of "progress" and compare numbers with the rest of the country's results. No matter what demographics you have, you're tested to be at the same level as everyone else. So, yes 'dumbing down' the overall to make up for the lower end. They ease up the test so the average raises so the districts don't get penalized and lose funding. The No Child Left Behind Act is the single greatest boondoggle in American education history. Leave to someone who can't put four words together to form a sentence to champion its cause. OK, I'm through :)

I have to say I'm getting sick of hearing about how dumb this generation is. And how we can't do anything without someone holding our hands.

There, I fixed it for you. :D

I just finished that test and I really never taken a full algebra class in high school and I got those. I feel bad for our future. The teacher that posted earlier is correct about dumbing down the tests to get good scores. It is the govt's fault for dumbing down the youth.

Dang I have been out of school for 23 years now and I got those right. I was expecting something hard that I could not even guess and get a couple right.

When I went to school we only had to have one credit in math but I did take a business math and a pre-algebra class back then. I guess that is why I went to a factory to work for 20 years and ran into a dead end. I can't complain now though.

I am in high school and it appears that many of the members here dislike the youth. Try this problem from my calculus class and see if it's really that easy. I know there are always a few bad apples out there but you can't judge a group by the actions of one member, I didn't choose to be born in the same decade as many of my peers but now i am forced to suffer because of their mistakes? Where is the justice in that.

If a particle (moving left and right along the x-axis) has velocity equation V(t)=(t squared)-t-6 , and its initial position is 7, find:

(a) The position equation, s(t)

(b) The total distance traveled by the particle on the time interval [0,5]

No cheating! No calculator.

Ummm. Trick question. :p

But seriously I agree with what you said. But then again who am I to comment I'm one that got sent to a continuation school. :D

But hey call it what you will I got out of school six months earlier then the average chump and ,hey, I was a screw up. Or at least I was labeled a screw up as soon as I showed up for RTP ,responsibility training program, to see if I was Valley High School material. But thank god there we're a bunch of teachers at that school that believed in second chances.

I wasn't judged once by those teachers because of whatever happened in the past. And I got along great with all of them. I'm glad they weren't as judgemental as most on this site seem to be. :(

And another thing I have picked up on ,not just here on TC, but most parents seem to think that their kids are the golden child and most other kids are second rate.

To you youngsters who are here. You are right and I was wrong to classify you negatively. I apologize. No excuses would be correct. I guess it is a trait of each generation to think this way of those that follow us. It is not the way it should be.

I must say that where I live there are a bunch of good kids who are also high achievers. There are of course those that aren't as well but generally the kids are a bunch of good kids. I am fortunate to live in town with a great school system, and a town with a lot of parental involvement in raising all the kids.

I believe that those on this site are probably more self motivated and engineering oriented than the average youngster too, which gives you an advantage in many things in life.

Mea culpa, my generalization wasn't fair.
