I bid on a couple of hats from the same seller recently, and made the stupid mistake of not asking the seller if they would combine shipping, since they didn't say so on the auction.
Anyway, I won them. So, when they sent me an invoice, I emailed them at least twice thru their auction and their personal email asking if they'd combine shipping. The only response I got was another eBay invoice for the same amount including $12.00 for shipping.
I realize I should have determined if they combined shipping (1st class mail) before I bid and that's my bad decision. Buut, if they weren't trying to make money off their shipping, they'd be decent enough to combine shipping, right? It's less trouble to throw 2 (used) hats in the same box than it is to package 2 hats separately, I do believe.
I hate to ruin my over 200 transaction 100% feedback rating, but since they didn't even have the courtesy to answer back yay or nay, I think that's what's gonna happen, unfortunately.

Sorry for the novel.

Thanks for any opinions or flames. :D

Looks like you are going to pay shipping on two hats, If they did not answer your question, Don't bid. - If shipping is not listed and I contact them for a price and they don't respond I dont bid. Nothing like paying $30.00 shipping and then when it finally gets here via USPS the package says $2.85 :(

Once you enter into a transaction can't you get the person's contact info including a phone number? If you can, pick up the phone and call them. If they are not answering the question via email, I'd try that. If you can't do that pay up and learn from it :D

Dave,
How long has it been since you first tried to contact them ? SOme of the larger sellers are very busy and might take a few days to respond. Why dont you try calling them ?? All you have to do is:

To request a person’s contact information:
Click the “Advanced Search” link, located under the Search button in the top right corner of most eBay pages.

Under the Members section on the left side of the page, click the “Find Contact Information” link and provide the User ID of the member and the Item number of the transaction you have in common.

Personally, if you bid on the items not knowing in advance if they would combine shipping .... I think you should do the right thing and complete the transaction.

Even if you don't receive a response, just chalk it up as a lesson learned. Sure $12.00 x 2 is a lot for shipping, but in reality it's only $24.00...probably how much you'd spend on a Friday night...well almost. :D But it's only an extra $12.00, now, will $12.00 make a difference in your life and make you lose sleep? I sincerely hope not. I'm sure once you receive your hats, you'll hopefully forget about the shipping costs.

Respectfully,
John R.

Don't feel bad, my mom did just as bad if not worse! She bought some knick nacks for a total of 0.85. There were three separate items. They said shipping was six dollars (which you know is a bit high) the add also said they would ship multiple buys together. When she got the invoice it was for 18.75! She emailed and never heard back so she went through the whole thing of contacting ebay. They told her while the wording was somewhat deceptive it states that they will ship items together but does not say they will combine shipping! Therefor they did nothing wrong. They did say they asked the seller to make his shipping policy explaination a little clearer!
My mom was upset but paid up. Then the seller gave her a negative!:(
It did eventually have an upside though! About two years later a lady in the senior living center she lives at was a collector and bought two of the items for a total of 300.00!

I did the same thing with some lionel train cars. I didn't realize until I went to pay that they were from the sale seller. When I emailed him to see if he would combine shipping, he added the cost of combined shipping on to the oriiginal shipping costs!

luckily, in this case it was just an error os his part, fixed it. sorry you got burned, but a $12.00 burn isn't nearly as bad as the $400 burn I got buying disc brakes on ebay without doing my homework. my lesson learned, lol.

What hats did you get from ebay?

I just about quit Ebay for years, but recently started buying smaller items again. I had a guy once tell me it would be $64 to ship a swingarm for a bike, because he only shipped UPS. So I paid for it. Then the box shows up in the mail with a stamp costing $22.  I let the guy know how I felt about it, he said he'd refund the $42 difference, but I never did hear from him again, nor did I see my money. Hopefully, karma is working the guy over now for that. I fully believe in the stuff, I see it all the time around me.

Just wondering, what kind of hats do you buy on E-Bay?
Dale Earnhardt Sr. hats. I sorta collect them. You can find some good ones on the bay for nice deals, sometimes. :D

S&H is a big problem on E-bay.... I bought a grip for my Kawasaki for $10 and then got hit for $12 for S&H for a total of $22. Then when the package arrived it was not a package at all, it was a bubble wrapped envelope with $1.97 for shipping!!!

I always state my shipping price in the listing so people know the final price. Sometimes I lose a few cents and sometimes I make a few but I know as a buyer I like to see that shipping cost listed. I always reduce shipping on multiple item even if people do not ask, its just the right thing to do.

I once sold a car ad from a 1965 magazine on ebay for $5. In the auction I stated the shipping was the minimum Priority rate ($3.35 more or less at the time). I new I could put the ad between two pieces of cardboard in a manila envelope and be under the minimum fee and they would get their stuff in 2-3 days.

The winning bidder emailed me and said my shipping was outrageous for shipping one piece of paper. I explained the time to carefully package it so it did not get damaged, cost of the envelope, take it to the PO, etc. but she still complained. After 2 or 3 emails I finally told her to just send me instructions and what she thought the shipping was worth.

She sent me 50 cents and said "to just put in in an envelope". I folded it enough for it to fit in a standard envelope and mailed it to her. Didn't hear anything back so I guess she was happy.
