I use a combination =

- Hyd falt tappets: Comp and Lunati (good street grinds)
- Hyd rollers: Crane (billet cores with cast dist gears)
- Solid rollers: Cam Motion and Comp (nice custom work)

:D

Is Cam Motion located in FL? And did they used to go by the name "Cam Technique"?

EDIT:ooops.... I just answered my own question. Nope, they're two different companies that are both in FL...I once used a cam from Cam Technique, and it was great.

Aaaaaand it's Lunati coming around the last turn with Comp a 1/2 stride behind. Can Comp pull it out before the finish????????? :noway: NOOOOO! It's Lunati with a neck stretch across the finish line!! :disco:

Whew! Glad I didn't bet on that one. :D

Another vote for Engle. Service is great....and you can also get owner on the phone.

They have lots of stuff not on their site.

I like Crane for basic designs that always run well and don't hurt parts.

Comp can build some killer stuff......but you have to really dig through their offerings and find someone there to work with besides normal tech line folks.

I think something from Chris or CI would be on my next list when I have to change the current old school thing I have.

Chris Straub at straub technologies. Great service and technical advice.

Why is such a major cam company as Crane so far behind here?
Crane, Comp and Lunati are all good. I think Lunati is ahead because of Harold's designs. In the race field, i say crane and comp. Crane has some excellent small block lobes out that you will not find in the catalog, they are custom ground. Crane has very very good BB lobes and Pro Stock lobes. Crane also has lobes that are not listed in their lobe master book that are offered for important people like Warren Johnson and Kurt Johnson etc, not for people like us

WHT/73,
just curious, how high do you have your idle turned up to achieve 14" of vacuum with that cam in your 350??? and one can assume in Park/neutral???

While I believe comp make some good grinds, there tech line disappoints me. They just dont have the expertise. The last 406 I built, I called 3 times, spoke with 3 different tech's, gave the exact same info and received 3 different recommendations for cams.

Your not gonna get the same suggestion from 3 different people, grant it the duration should be within 5° of what the other one said and with in 2° of lobe seperation, On a dyno your only talking about a 300-500 rpm difference if the duration is 5° off and the lobe seperation is 2° off from the prior one

Look at it this way, their tech guys talk to 1,000's of people a day, one may have gave you a suggestion and the next one may have just got off the phone with a customer with a close combo to yours and he may suggest that cam because he actually has feed back on that one

Now, myself, billk, wolfplace and other engine builders have what they call a tech/salesman, there are a few, those guys are excellent at selecting grinds and as far as i know the public cant call these guys unless you have an account with comp cams

I would give a big shout out to Cammotion.. I have a few of their cams in my stable and they are each specked out per you engine. Not a big generic like Comp.

Their support is great.

Their cams are like art work.

They perform very well for me. I have used the billet core hydraulic rollers with pressed on distributor gears.

I also have a Lunati the same type but UD Harold specked it out for me and it is the best running combo and smooth as silk yet runs hard.

Comp cams tech for engine builders are great. 99% of the time they do a custom grind for us. Now as to the cam help line, i would say theu are probally suggesting off the shelf cams to the public. If buying a cam, i would suggest buying it from one of the following:
-engine builder
-machine shop
-someone that has an account with the cam company that gets that 1 on 1 service

Fair enough trmntor but in my case there was a descrepancy of 18* from; (not in this order)
XR276HR, 224/230/110 to;
XR282HR, 230/236/110 (which was my choice before I even called) to;
XR294HR, 242/248/110.
Also, I indicated they were ported AFR heads, not one of them even asked for the port volume or flow #'s.

The XR294HR kinda surprized me, otherwise I'd say the other 2 would be acceptable suggestions.

Mostly run only Comp or Crane in my time, had 1 Crane go flat. BUT, I started it up and started driving...duh.

Otherwise just got my new cam from Straub which was grinded by Bullet...once it lives I will post up with results!!

IMO, it depends on whether you are looking for a cam for a daily driver, a bracket car or "wannabe heads up" racing. Most of my recent experience has been with the latter and my choice is Jay Allen at Camshaft Innovations. Jay takes all of the factors (compression, rocker ratio, cam diameter, roller lifter diameter and wheel size, tranny type, gear ratios, car weight, etc.) into consideration and determines the valve events. Then he designs/selects ramps and lobes that match those events. Some have to adjust to his communication skills, but the results seem to speak for themselves.
