I picked up another set of old 461 double hump heads. They have been worked over and some of the guides have been replaced with cast iron .502 diameter pressed in guides. My question is can I have the machine shop push these out and go with the thick walled bronze guides or are these things done for- beyond repair?

Bob,
Yes there are .502 od bronze guides available. They work great and your shop should be able to do it. Most of them have a small step about 1/2" from the top, so you have to cut the old guide boss down flush first.
My only question is whether its really worth putting any money into 30 year old castings, especially when you can buy a modern, better flowing head, for not much more than what you will spend updating the old ones.

While I use the K-Liners in almost everything with excellent results this is one place I do not recommend them.
To install them properly you have to broach or expand them both for initial sizing & to set or "lock" them in place.
In the .502 type guide there is a very good chance you will crack the cast part above the head when you try to broach the liner as the guide has become quite thin from boring it for the liner.
I gotta go with Bill on this one, if you are wanting to keep these heads use the .502's in the material of your choice.

Actually they worked very well but are an older fix & I don't know of many shops using them anymore.

Thanks for the info, I guess I'll have the machine shop go ahead and press the old ones out and go with new bronze, I'll be going from 1.94/1.50s to 2.02/1.60s so my valve height should be back to square one.
These heads will end up on a nostalgic project down the road. I've also got a set of Bowtie phase 2 heads for a more serious roller cam project. What potential do the phase two heads have? anybody? I guess they have 185cc intake runners stock, and David Vizard's book shows where some gains can be made, but personally I have had no experience using them and have never seen anyone around here run them.
