Here's one of those cases when a 15 second check would have saved my ass. I was installing new headers and the transmission. I went to jack up the car and just knew I had the jack in the correct spot. But guess what? I bent my brand new Moroso 7qt. pan and the engines still never been fired. I real felt sick I banged my head on the floor over and over now I've got a headace!!!!!

OUTCH!!!...sorry to hear and see the bad news. I know how you feel. I had a really bad exhaust leak about 2 years ago. I went to my buddy's house so he could help me check it out. Well to make a long story short, he lifted the motor for me, don't remember why we had to do it for an exhaust leak, but anyways, I had to go inside the house really quick and I told him to go ahead an lift the motor with the jack. I've done this lots of times with no problems along as I use a 2x4. Well, he either wasn't thinking and set the jack under the pan and lifted the motor like that and dented my brand new Miloden oil pan. As weird as it sounds, I wasn't pissed or anything, I think maybe it's because I kinda broke his dad's creeper a while back

...Well, I still have the pan on there and it's ok, leaking a little, but ok. Hope you fix your pan quick and get that puppy on the road!!!

Well I doubt its far enough to hurt anything. The pic doesn't look too bad. No one will probably ever look under it anyways. Its one of those things that really really sucks, but you may just be able to live with it and not have to pull the motor to replace it at least. Problem with most new cars with the cast aluminum pans is the break when subjected to that and HAVE to be replaced no matter what.
Maybe you could get a stud welder and pull the dent out????

The weld thing is not a bad idea. I was have such a good day. My new Ceramic Coated 2" Hedman hedders when in with no mods and then this. It just knocked me off my cloud.

hehe, 15 second check. that's all it would have tooken me or my bro or my dad to look down the distributor hole and make sure there was a intermediate shaft in there. guess somebody forgot to put one in there. now the 305 siezed up and my bro's nova is out of comission, oh well, time for a 383 i guess. :D

The only thing that cant be fixed is a broken heart.
After I had to cut the scatter sheild edges to fit I don't plan to pull the pan unless I absolutely have to.

Brian is right you really should take it out & take the pan off.
If the pan is pushed up close to the pump intake it can pull the pan up against the pickup assembly & restrict or completly shut the oil flow off at higher RPM's
It can also suck a hole in the oil if it is real close to the pan & you end up circulating air which is not a real good lubricant :(

Dont feel to bad just the other day I was just finishing the Nova at 1am, jacked it up, pulled out the jackstands, and set it down. Hmmm wonder why its not sitting on the ground? Oh its the jackstand that is under the oilpan!

I actually am still driving it with the big dent, the oil pressure is just fine

I'll probably drain the oil and looking in the drain hole with a flash light to see if I can see the pick up tube.

Just because the oil pressure appears fine does not mean it is ok.
Again, you can pull the pan up against the pickup or suck a hole in the oil at high rpm if the pickup is too close to the pan ;)
It is just something that should be checked.
Cheaper than the possible alternative :D

Bad Rat,
If you have a quarter inch or so that you can see it should be fine.
If you don't have one get one of the little flexlights & you should be able to stick it clear past the pickup thorough the drain hole & see pretty good

I had to replace my 5 qt with a stock 4 qt last week b/c the 5 was square in the front instead of round and it punched a hole on the right side with the tie rod

. sucks donit!

I wonder if one of those suction cup style dent pullers would work? Also, you could get a hold of one of those paintless dent removal guys to do a house call and get it out. They would probably charge you about $50. I had 2 door dents popped out on my Z71 and it looks good and worked. Looks doesn't matter in your case. Function is what matters!!

I spot welded several nuts to the pan and used threaded rod and a slid hammer to pull most of it out, then removed the nuts. I got it away from the pick up tube. Now I feel MUCH better.

That's minor compared to what happened to me a few months ago. I'd already almost completely repressed it from my mind...LOL...Had my slidebody ramptruck jacked up in front on jackstands doing front brakes. All done and need to bleed the calipers. Grab the nearby blonde assistant and had her pump the brakes and hold them(she is a pro at brakes). Not working. Realized the engine needs to be running for this system to work on this vehicle. So I says- "we'll need to start it- is it in nuetral?" - she wiggles the shifter- "Yep"- Well- It wasn't in nuetral- it was in first gear. Truck jumps forward off the jackstands and puts the jack right THROUGH the oil pan. The truck is now supported by the jack holding up the truck by the crankshaft...Well, aside from having to clean up the mess and replacing the oil pan, it really didn't do much damage other than that- but the "assistant" now knows that we always push in the clutch when starting, even when we "know" it's in nuetral...Yikes!
