Well i am in the market for a set of aftermarket heads for my SB.

i keep going back and forth on what i want, and what i can afford.

i dont want to spend more than 1200 on a set ready to go for a roller cam.

my first choice were the Patriot Super Street Series in 195cc.
next was the AFR Eliminator 195cc
now im onto a sert of RHS heads (my friend runs them on a 11:1 388).

what about the big runner/valve vortec heads? or stock vortecs that are worked? but that would put me way more than i want to spend.

i want somthing with about 190cc intake runner as it will be driven on the street more than at the track, but will see alot of track time also.
i need low to mid range tq, and streetability.

i wouldnt mind a 180cc runner, as that would make most low to mid range power, but will it not be enough for my cam. 200cc is just too big.

my combo is,

355
10:1cr
lunati voodoo roller 60122, 535/55 lift, 231/239 duration (282/290), 110/106.
holley 300-36 intake, with 1" carb spacer
3310 750 vac sec holley

so what has everybody run, and what would you recommend.

I have always liked the smaller port for street manners, the 180s should do well on your combo. If your looking for max power and not street cruising then the 195s will make more power and allow you to go bigger on the cam if thats what you want down the road. I saw over 500 hp out of the edelbrock 170s and a great torque curve on a 350 test mule.

I'm a fan of the AFRs. The 195 Eliminator would be a perfect match with a healthy roller cam in that 355.

I run the CNC'd AFR 210s (which are 215s) on my 383 with a solid roller and an Air Gap, and I am very happy with it. A 195 on your 355 with an Air Gap and a roller would be great.

You're not going to get into the AFRs with roller springs for $1200. Probably closer to $1500. Brodix RR are probably closer to that number. Wolfplace can "save you a buck or 2" on the AFRs.

AFR's are nice but pricey. I've never ran them but would love to see a back to back honest test on a dyno or track by someone.

Henery D, are you listening ? head shoot-out without bias.

I'm running the Protopline 200cc Iron Lightnings (Now owned by RHS) and like them a lot. They are as cast (so I have room to grow if I like) and pull hard to 7000+. A friend was running the aluminum 220's @ 12:1 in a 383 to 8000 and in the low 10's... so I know they work.

yeah talked to wolfplace, and almost ordered them, but knowing me, i always come up with somthing else.

i just want to look at EVERY option, and see what would be BEST.

im thinking 180cc aluminum heads. not sure which though.
the RHS's say they are good to 325hp, so im not sure about those. i just do not want somthing that will kill low end, but still give me mid and top.

I have the TrickFlow Twisted Wedge Heads 180cc, 64cc and they make awesome power. They flow just as good as AFR but less cost. I think these will also work great with your combo. Port matched to Weiand Stealth intake and I,e ports blended.

Scott

355sb, 472 hp, 440 tq.

mm thanks.

i have a set of small valve 461 camel humps that came off my last combo.
too bad they are outdated, or i would have them worked. but it would cost too much to make them perform anywhere near a vortec head even.

If you like you could go to the super chevy magazine website and do a search on the series called danger mouse. They built a flat top 350 sb short block with all the good stuff, then every month they tried a new head combo and also switched intakes so as to give a good comparison.

For me it was some great reading, after all the testing they were amazed at the performance of the Edelbrock E-tec 170 heads. They made one of the best average power curves out of all the heads tested. Some of the more fancy heads with the big price tags made a bit more power on the high side but not as much as one would expect. When they did a compare of average torque and HP the E-tecs were at the top. Velocity along with the fast burn chamber, quench area were the key factors.

I have close to the same engine Aaron, except that I have a 268 voodoo cam. I have a pair Dart I/E's,180 runners. Did a little of my own porting and I'm more than satisfied. I use the car basically the same as you so I really didn't see the need for aluminum heads.

I loved the danger mouse series!

Aaron,just a thought,but I have a 355 sollid roller motor,in my 67, with a Comp.cams XE280R roller cam,9.98:1 comp.ratio,Canfield 195-65 CNC heads,RPM Air GAP intake,with a 1" open spacer,Barry Grant Carb, 675 cfm,1 5/8 primary tube headers,etc.It is plain scarry for a 355. Cam specs are a little wild for a true street car,but it's, OK.

242 & 248 @.050,with .570 &.575 lift,110 LSA.I have a 2800 converter and 3.89 gears,too.Haven't run it at the track,yet.But, I laid some pretty good black marks on the concrete drive. "Big mistake."

thanks a lot guys.

i am checking into the Edelbrocks a little more closely. they seem to be about right in my price range.

i remember a build i think popular hotrodding did, they used very similar combo to me, with EQ (engine quest) heads on it, and it made very nice numbers. i belive over 450hp.

thanks.
