Ordering a crane cam, should I get the matched lifters? Or is there something better? Just curious, used to have a set of rhodes lifters. Always thought they were pretty good, are they still around, can't seem to find them? Dave

The Cranes are fine.
I think or at least hope most of the major cam guys are using Stanadyne as they are the only player left in the US right now except for the real good race lifters from a couple of suppliers like Precision Products & Schubeck but I am hearing rumors that is about to change in the near future.
I would stay away from any "good deal" lifters as some are coming from places a little less reliable

O.K., think I'll go with the crane cam, lifter set.

Wolfplace, thanks for the response and the link. Guess it would really help if I spelled rhoads correctly.

Just out of curiosity, for a street 454 with:

454 .060 over
.270 sealed power domed piston's = 10:25-1
781 heads, cut for larger valves
crane 286 cam 286/296 duration 534/553 lift
performer intake, holley 750
turbo 400
3:73 posi rear

Would the rhoads lifters really make a noticable difference? What's your reccomendation on lifters. Thanks for the replies, Dave
 
Ditto on both above posts, you don't want or need the Rhoads with that cam & your compression. I'd Just order the cam with the Crane lifters ;)
 
Just to horn in a bit on this thread. Are the lifters with the .021 hole in the sole worth the trouble to keep a steady supply of oil on the lobe or is it simply overkill?

Rich, after using a crane energizer cam/lifters,a bracket master II cam/lifters with neither cam lasting over 5 months, we put a Comp Cams xe274h in my sons truck with Lunati Microlube lifters its gone 6 months so far with no problems. They are supposed to have a ground flat to hold more oil on the cam lobe while operating,whatever they have,its working. The first cam wiped two lobes on the drivers side,the second cam wiped one lobe on the drivers side totally different lobe from the first cam, I'm not sure if it was because we stepped up to a little more pricey lifter or the slightly more radical lobe of the xe274,whichever it was,its working,better knock on wood

Rich, I just broke in a cam over the weekend with Howards direct lube lifters. Cam specs are: Solid liters, 298/308 advertised, 258/268 @ .050, .560/.580 lift, 106 LSA, .018/.020 lash

This is in a 11.48:1 350, with a Tunnel Ram. It idles a bit on the rough side ;)

So far, so good

Depends on the cam but I feel they are well worth it for the more aggressive cams out there.
You are aware this is not an option for a hyd right?? :D

I have been using them for a while on the P55 cores with some pretty aggressive lobes in circle track stuff with no problems & they are a lot less money than the next step up which are about $350.
Or you could always spring for the Schubecks ;)

The P55 core is probably not really necessary but for about $30 extra it's my preference ;)

Just for info, we have been grooving the lifter bores on almost all performance hyd cams for quite some time now.

Count me in among the microlube believers.

I've got about 5 or 6 hundred miles on my new Lunati solid grind and microlube lifters. No problems with break in, and I've only had to adjust the valves twice.

They WILL drop your oil pressure. In my basically stock 408 BB with stock pump but a Z28 spec spring, I lost about 10 LBS at idle - from about 35 to 25.

Definately reassuring to know that the lobes are getting plenty of oil while the engine is idling.

Is it a good idea to run a HV/HP oil pump when using the microlube solid flat tappet lifters?

I am seriously considering them in my sbc 406 project. The cam I'll be using is a Lunati/Ultradyne grind with a decent amount of lift and duration.

Need some help here, Just installed a magnum comp cam with matching lifters.. cannot get the intake lifters to quiet down... Exhaust is quiet

This is the second cam from comp cams, the first was a Extreme Energy 588I 592E and had thought I had just got too wild with the tunnel ram and dual 600's so I went the other way, Air Gap Intake, 800 carb and 520I 520E cam.

Man, this is driving me nuts, the stock lifters and stampted rockers were quiet as a mouse.
The Pro Magnum Full Roller Rockers and Comp Cams lifters suck.. What am I overlooking??? Please Help!!!

I have those lifters too and noticed a drop in pressure. Didn't know it was attributable to the lifters.
