Get a load of this!
Last night I was relaxing after a long day of work and deer hunting, the phone rings as I'm sitting down to drink a couple of beers and watch the Bills get slaughtered by the Pats. The guy on the other end introduces himself and proceeds to tell me he got my phone number by doing a search in the Cuba area. He ended up getting a hold of my brother, since my number is unlisted, and my brother gave him my number. I'm going to strangle my brother.
He then goes on and tells me he is getting rid of a bunch of old Super Chevy issues and he comes across a letter that I wrote to the editor back in 1990 about vins and doing searches and finding previous records. He wondered if I still had the car and if I might be interested in getting the original paperwork for my car. He said he is from the Philly area where my car is supposedly from, and he might be able to help me out. He said if he had the last three digits of my vin, he has a bunch of old paperwork from dealerships from the late 60's and 70's he might be able to match it up. Of course I didn't give him any info, but he told me to check out my vin and give him a call back. He said it is a long shot, but he might match something up, as he had several sales items for 69 Chevelles. He seemed particularly interested in a certain 375hp 396 car that a friend of his bought new and and later sold.
He sounded sincere but the whole thing seemed just too bizzare. It just weirded me out that some stranger from out of the blue would be calling me Sunday night about my car and wanted vin info etc. Wouldn't you be suspicious ? :beers:

Oh yeah...............I'd be padlocking my garage doors if I were you & pulling the wheels/tires off it for the winter & stash them in my basement:yes:

Some people go to great lengths to document their cars or to track down a certain car, so he might just have collected more documentation than he needs. But of course, some people go to great lengths to scam other people too... I don't know if it would hurt any to give him the last three digits of the VIN though, might be worth a shot.

Yup, that IS wierd. Maybe, ....just maybe, he's trying to research his friends old car. Would you think it's wierd if you called him to find out where your car came from? Either way, I'd be REAL skiddish about giving up info on your car.

I wouldn't give him any info, but I thought about calling him and asking him about his vin numbers on the paperwork he has. Just to see...like you said you never know.

this may be legit BUT, If he found your #..........he can find your car.

How true. I had a #s matching '70 Judge back in the late 80s and planned on restoring it. It was a nice driver but needed restoration. One day I was at Hampton Beach, NH and some people came around the car, etc. and I said I wasn't sure if I was going to restore it that I MIGHT think about selling it. A week later I got a phone call from a guy in Florida (my # was also unlisted/unpublished) and he said, "I heard you have a '70 Judge you're thinking about selling"!! This totally freaked me out. If people want to find you they will!

Wierd for sure but I wouldn't dismiss it totally Mike. It just may be legit...

I personally have some documentation on a '68 Shelby GT500KR I once owned. Quite valuable when attached to the car.
I've tried extensively to locate the current owner...even thru the Shelby Registry with no success to date.
I've come to the conclusion that this car no longer exists.

That's what I was thinking Bill. It just might be legit. You just never know what fate might have in store for you. It just caught me off guard that he said he found the article in a 1990 SC magazine and he might be able to help me out. Then he hunted me down. I mean, it was just a little paragraph asking a question with a picture of my car 18 years ago. I had to dig into my memory bank and had to think about it, but I did pull it out of the archives and realized what he was talking about. I had forgotten all about it. It would be awesome if it worked out. I also think I will try and get the vins that he has and post them on here if he wouldn't mind. Maybe it would help someone else out.
The 375 hp 69 he was looking for was a green one that had been raced in the early 70's and when sold it was still intact, but had been in an accident and had some front end damage of some sort. I think he thought my car might be the one and that his friend was looking for it.
I'll give it a try and let you know how I make out

Maybe it was the person that posted on here a while back about all the different vehicle information stuff he had came across and was trying to find some of the current owners.
I was thinking the same thing. Although I thought he was from the New Hampshire, Mass area, which isn't far from Philly. When a dealership closes the paperwork has to go somewhere. Most is probably stored or destroyed. This gentleman bought the paperwork form a few dealerships and has been trying to match it up for people. Let us know what happens.

I could be waaaay off base here but a few months back over at Chevytalk we had a fellow join our forums offering up VIN info for a very long list of cars he said he had info on. The catch??? He wanted upwards of a thousand bucks for each vehicles info. He is no longer with us. ;)

I'd say that he was a bit high in price, but what if you could get the dealer info that proved your car was originally an SS and you had no other paperwork to prove it? I think 1k value would be realized easily with the dealer info. Your car would be worth (if you were selling) several thousand dollars more.

Is 3 numbers really enough to do anything with? I mean, if he is up to no good and what not? I would think you would need a lot more digits in the VIN then that?

I posted a link a few weeks ago on that. It was in craigs list. The guy had a list of vin's with supposed documentation for all of them listed. It didn't seem like a scam but you never know ?? Anybody can get your vin now very easily. Think about it. At a store, gas station or evan a car show. It would take two seconds to scribble down the vin on a piece of paper. Why would he want it anyway if it was a scam ? to clone your car ? steal it ?
