I'm about to have my 496 built and cant decide on N/A or supercharger like smaller 177 or 174 whatever its called, that will fit under the hood

want to run pump gas and go 9`s if possible and be driven to and from the track..

anyone running these please list setup and drive ability i drive about 25 miles one way to the track and cruise the car to car shows regularly

want 9`s bad!! not a 9.99 but 9.6 or 9.7`s
is this possible on pump gas or do i need to run a mix of race gas and pump gas or all race gas at the track and pulley it for the street

1987 Olds cutlass 442
th400 with brake
373`s 28x10 or 26x10 slicks
3500+ stall

Under the hood with a 496 and run 9,s will require a centrifugal supercharger imho.An 8-71 would be my choice..but you are not hiding that lung from anyone.A 177 cid blower is a no no over 496 cid.

Superchevy did a article on a 496 with 8.9-1 compression and it made 3psi of boost 660hp/690tq and it was a screamer. If you put that same combo which was mild in a light car and perfect conditions it might hit low 10's. IMHO,i'd run a centrifigual trying to go underhood and run that fast.

A 177 isn't a bad thing for a big block but a 250 sized blower by weiand would be better and could fit under a 4" cowl hood with a air system sealed to the hood. Not much room but much more power avalible with a 250 v.s. 177. You can run single carb with a 250 but might not reach a high HP number with a single carb.

Theres not alot of tests or feedback on the 250 sized blowers....I've done some searching and can't find much on E/T's or what peoples combos are. Most I guess opt for the smaller 177 or just jump to 6-71.

you would prob have to spin the crap out of a blower that small to get much out of it, if you were not going to step to something larger, you might be better off building the engine up the the most streetable comp., spend the money you were going to spend on the little blower on better engine parts, and slap a 150 hp nos setup
i have a 489 w/f1r procharger, been 9.90's on low boost, a lot left in it but purpose built to fit under a stock hood, so not the best intake, but just a street toy anyway
a few years ago, i ran a 355 with a b & m 250, it ran high 11's with a pretty much stock motor, 57 chevy

havent heard of a 250 my ideas were to keep it pretty simple
single carb blower
i have a 4inch cowl hood but didnt want to go to a 8-71
engine builder says over 600hp on pump gas ont he engine alone with pump gas and under 11 to 1 more like 10.25 to 1

i need to decide on a blower or keep it all motor. i run nitrous in the mustang but i want something thats there all the time
im looking to make 700+hp
how much are the 250 blowers and can you get one new?

i also like the idea of being able to pully the car for track use and race gas and then use a pully for the street for pump gas only

need help cant make up my mind and i need to decide within the next few days cause im sending him my parts and a check this week or next week

and need to decide on what compression pistons ill be using
all motor ill run around 10.25 to 1

blower i guess should be about 8 to 1 8.5 to 1

is it worth spending the money on the blower?
i ran a s trim on 91 firebird formula and it was a low end monster
but those blowers are expensive!!

anyoen run a turbo BBC?

A 250 or the 256 isn't a "smidge" more than the 177!! More like $3,000+ last time I checked..

But that said, onna them is right at 1.25" lower than the other and I have to say that guy's have told me which is which and my memory is about as long as something else on my body!! My left hand index finger so gotcha!!

H, He!!

I really figure a 250 or 256 (i.e., the short one) would be one heck of a cowl hood sleeper combination on a 496 and even a MILD 540!!

And fwiw, I'm looking into block prices so I can build a 588'er or blow my 496'er IF the sucker doesn't give me that, "Oh my", seat of the pants 3rd gear charge I am looking for at 75 mph!!

Paul,I recently looked at the 250-256 versions for BBC's and they were $3100 for those blowers. I like the 16rib belt version which would be a tad quieter than the traditonal Gilmer belt drive. Don't get me wrong,I love the noise of the big blowers all around but for me im trying to go super quiet and silent for the sleeper image......except for my 4" cowl hood and 10" wide Mickey Thompsons!:p

Right Mike!

Doug, you would be supprised what just 3 to MAYBE 4 pounds of boost will do for a BB's power production on a 496 motor whose combination is well thought out for a 177's use..

I want to say like 125(??) hp over N/A?? You take one mild, about 550 hp/496 and add one 177 blower and I can see 675 to maybe 700 hp easy..

Onna the mag's did just such a test a while back and it supprised me!!

All this said, the 250/256 on a 454 was reaching up to like 700 hp if I remember right from onna Weiand's REAL OLD blower flyers that I have stashed away in my closet..

Is the goal of the car ET or just horsepower? What ET's are you planning on going for? 800hp should get you in the 9 second Et range.
i want enough power to get me and my car into the low 10`s and possibly high 9`s

1987 oldsmobile 442
rear suspension is uper and lower south side machine bars
90/10 up front new stock rears with air bags rear
373 posi
th400 with trans brak and reverse pattern valve body
full interior
this is a weekend warrior car that comes out ion the summer and rests in the winter
i have a good engine builder just need to decide on buying a blower or not casue thats will need to be decided before hand

I still like the 256 blower option for a big block. Its shorter than the 6-71 still and might fit without major issues on a big hood. It theroetically should support 750hp if the 177 can support 650hp from previous articles and tests. I think 800hp on racegas is doable with a slight overdrive on the blower v.s. underdriven. It would come very close to a 4" hood but I'd get a 5" glasstek just to be sure.;)

Keep us posted,I love boost myself.

so whats the best single carb blower i can get?

i guess i can get the hood cut and go for a 671 i just need to decide if its worth it so i can decide on low compression for a blower or mild compression for all motor engine.......

eee dadvice

i have a 468 bbc 13.1comp cam is a Doug Herbert 596in and 625out with a 310dur. speedpro pistons heads are 2.19in and 1.88out with crane rollers i have single tunnel ram with a 4150 950 alky carp...with stock rods and stock crank this engine pulled 605hp on the dyno ....i wanted to keep this on the street it will go in a 1982 vette its tubbed with a 5.00 gear with and a th400 trans and a 3800stall... i did my home work with this combo bilt the engine from carb to pan for $5,500 ....on the dyno we changed the carb to a 1050gas it pulled 625hp then a 1200gas carb and it pulled 675hp the torque was unreal we pushed it to 6000rpm each time....but this is a prostreeter so i went with the smaller 950 alky carb...i bought a lot of the parts off ebay i was in no hurry it took me about a year to build...this car will run in the 9's with slicks i did build this engine for NOS so 700plus hp is there but i don't want to blow out the bottom end...so do your home work... oh yea i have a noisey timming gear so i do have the BLOWER SOUND ....all parts are new except the intake...
